She's right, but I was stunned today to learn that when Carter was President and the Democrats had strong majorities in both houses, there were FIVE shutdowns adding up to about 60 days. Now THAT guy was a hostage magnet.

Yeah, the last three Dem presidents have faced shutdowns. The GOP doesn't handle losing very well.

Cornered prey will often mount a final desperate attack. To prevent this you let the enemy believe he still has a chance for freedom. His will to fight is, thus, dampened by his desire to escape. When, in the end, the freedom is proven a falsehood, the enemy's morale will be defeated and he will surrender without a fight.

As per my customs, I shall enter this thread and speak about how much the word "hero" gets thrown around too often.

My idea of bringing back "heleth" (modern spelling "helth") for actual heroic actions would be pretty neat

Experience.  Hillary is many things, but she is not stupid, nor is she incompetent.  She proved herself to me at State.  Warren, whom I find more appealing on other levels, and who is every bit as intelligent, is simply not nearly as experienced.  And look at what the GOP has to offer - America can't afford for them to win, for the love of Cthulhu.

Really fascinating reporting from Robert Costa tonight, if anyone is curious, about the complete and total hatred between Boehner and Reid, and how that loathing is a huge driver of all this that's kind of flying under the radar. Boehner seems to really, really, really hate Reid.

Fair enough, and I don't disagree. That's why I said she'd be good for 2020 (though hopefully in 2020 some Democrat is running for re-election).

More than a thousand employees at Westover Air Force Base and Barnes Air National Guard Base in Western Massachusetts are facing furloughs.

Why?  Didn't the House and Senate just approve the Pay Our Military Act?  That should authorize their salaries.

Boner loves his job more than he hates Reid. A real American, in the pit of battle, would sacrifice himself for his country. Floor a clear CR, get voted out as speaker, have a bourbon and realize he did the right thing.

He is not an American, he's a Selfist. Preserve what he has at all costs no matter who suffers.

I sympathize with that. I'm skeptical of politicians as a class, but I'd remind you that Hillary's top aide was Mrs. Anthony Weiner. Are you sure that's the brand of circus you want? 'cause that's what you're gonna get.

Well, I did read it, and it appropriates: "sums as are necessary to provide pay and allowances to the civilian personnel of the Department of Defense (and the Department of Homeland Security in the case of the Coast Guard) whom the Secretary concerned determines are providing support to members of the Armed Forces..."

I hope that this administration not laying off civilian military employees needlessly, just to try to blame it on the Tea Party and all.  That would be ugly.

How many brilliant people do you know who are married to an asshole? I know a few. It does not diminish the input from the brilliant person, you just distance yourself from their partner.

Huma was farked from the get-go. I actually like Dickpic because he was good at fighting, but he proposed no legislation, he basically cheated on his wife and he sucked at covering it up.

As much as we are humans... If you can't cover up banging some chick, we don't think you can cover up killing some people as you might do in the Situation Room. So, that's a knock.

Don't blame Huma for Anthony being a dick.

Calm the fark down, ok?

Your ilk needs to be taught a lesson

You are ruining this country over a dick size contest.

And no, Dems didn't want the shutdown. Of course there are those partisan assholes who will always take advantage of the crisis for political gain. That is humanity. But, the facts are crystal clear: the GOP manufactured this. They want ObamaCare gone. The fact is is that IT ISNT farkING GOING AWAY. THERE IS NOTHING THAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT THIS.

You have no idea how the military works and I won't mansplain it to you. You are talking about civilian MPs and the like. Yes, they keep the watch. Everyone else is fired.

I saw an advanced screening of Captain Phillips on Monday. It's about a group of overconfident pirates who take a hostage and then make a series of tactical errors that leaves them adrift at sea, literally boxing themselves into a situation where they are surrounded and outmatched, with no hope of succeeding, but refuse to admit defeat long after everyone else knows it's over.

Just sayin'...

Civilian MPs?  No, it's not limited to that.  In order for these civilians to get paid under the Pay Our Military Act, the administration need only determine that "they are providing support" to the military. Weren't those 800 civilians that got laid off in your home town doing that?  Seems like all civilians who are employed by the military are providing some sort of support for the military.  The only reason for the administration laying them off would be to try to further their plan to blame the Tea Party for this shutdown.  That's just not right.
