You still have a better chance to hit the powerball.

Honestly? I would have thought the odds lower. You can't throw a rock without hitting a whitetail in Kansas.

Haven't these people heard of hunting?

Agreed.  Woulda thought the odds were much more in favor.

Yes they have. This time of year you need to be VERRRY careful about what trail you decide to hike or bike on, unless you want to be mistaken for a deer.

Yes that is always fun. Did it a couple years ago with my new Tahoe.. 487 miles on it and I saw the 4 running across the interstate ... but didn't see the 5th.

"Mistaken for a deer" my ass, just getting thier bag limit on annoying cyclists that dont obey traffic laws or share the road.

I almost hit a deer once. I was going 55mph down a country road, when a doe and her fawn popped out from the side of the road. They were too near for me to brake in time, so I had to shoot for the gap inbetween them.

I nearly shat myself.

Good...I've been wanting some deer meat.

My wife's cousin (and yes, he's in Western Iowa) kitted out his old Bronco II with a brush cutter for that purpose.  Hit 3 the first year he had it, called the Sheriff's office to send someone out to tag them, then took them home to field dress them.

Had a fair amount of venison in his freezer that year, even after taking off the "over tenderized" parts

I have lived in Iowa nearly all my life and have never hit a deer. I know a guy who moved here from Connecticut and hit three in 18 months.

2013-10-01 09:34:14 PM
I lived in Iowa from the time I was 13 until I was about 25. I don't have official statistics among my peer group, but I'm pretty sure by now every person I know that has lived in Iowa has hit a deer at some point.

My first one was the last day of deer season, after I'd spent 10 days in the woods freezing my ass and not seeing a single deer.
Never did find it after it ran into the side of my car right after sundown.

The other deer I've hit was in a rental car when I was back in the midwest visiting for for the holidays. Somebody in the oncoming lane hit it first, then it bounced into my lane and landed on my hood. Enterprise was not pleased, but it seemed to be a common thing for them to deal with. They gave me a new car and didn't harass me about the damage.

Now THIS is hilarious. FTFA: The Department of Transportation, meanwhile, only keeps track of animal-related crashes that are reported to them, of which there were 6,236 in 2012.

Click the link (you'll have to do it from TFA). Or, you can just mouse over the link in TFA.

Do you see it? Do you see the HTMLFAIL?

lol

On any given evening, there will be around 6 in the yard. Sometimes more. The police in VA say not to call them if you hit a deer unless there are human injuries involved.

/couple of weeks back, one whitetail was inches away from my bedroom window. I snuck over while she was looking away and put my face up next to the window, about 4 inches away from her head through the glass. After a minute she noticed me. Those farkers can JUMP

Interesting fact.  Apparently while sleeping the average American will swallow 3 deer a year.

Almost hit an antelope in Texas, and almost hit a moose in Newfoundland (there are moose everywhere in NFLD).  Havent hit a deer, yet

Didnt realize Iowa had a large deer population

2013-10-01 11:23:36 PM
Here in New Mexico, you don't hear much about people hitting deer and such, but every now and then you'll read about somebody hitting an elk. Last one I heard about was a guy on a motorcycle, and it did not end well.

I imagine hitting a deer on a motorcycle would be bad enough, but elk are friggen huge.

Western Iowa has a pretty good balance of wooded area and corn farms that deer can thrive on.

Live twenty miles from Iowa, hit about 4 in my life time.  Very low compared to my boss who manages to hit one or two a year.

2013-10-02 01:50:15 AM
My brother has hit two deer.  I've nearly hit a couple- including the second one he hit.  Christmas Eve, snowy, he was driving up to our mother's.  I was already there.  Got a call that he'd hit a deer and totaled his car about 15 minutes from her house.  The tow truck is on the way, but he needs a lift to mom's.  Okay, I climb in my car and head out.  As I'm approaching, from the west I see a cop car pulled over on the eastbound shoulder, and that's about it (the cop had his flood lights on, and with the glare in the falling snow, I can't see more than a few feet.)  I start pulling over onto the westbound shoulder, and suddenly I see a dead deer lying there.  I slam on my brakes and skid to about a foot from the deer.

And of course, Santa didn't have insurance.

I live in Iowa and I had a deer hit me. I was driving at night and all of a sudden I see a deer head come over the hood. Took out the driver's side mirror and the very back panel window on my Geo Metro. My friend sleeping in the backseat flipped out thinking we got shot at. Many years later, I'm with my wife and the same thing happens. Ran right into the side of the dang car.

2013-10-02 01:57:06 AM
of course, in Iowa, no matter how drunk you are or how mangled your car looks the next day: "Deer ran right in front of me. Yup. Biggest damn buck you ever saw too. 12 point? Shiat, mofo, that creature was a damned 69 point, I swear it."

2013-10-02 02:08:34 AM
My ex hit two in one season, the second one was toast via Grand Am. As was the Grand Am. Don't know about Iowa, but around here I can't take a hike without tripping over a couple, and one spot usually has between ten and twenty running around in the various fields. I consider it a slow day when I don't see any driving back from my in-law's.

/wish I were kidding
//but damn, they are delicious...

Its the genetically modified corn.  the deer are just more fertile these days.
