That could have gotten me to brush the dust off of my WiiU, looks like it's staying there until smash bros is out.

Understandable, since most Wii games are designed with motion controls in mind.

Just drop the motion control already. We don't want it.

I'm sure the cost of updating the Wii games to work with the Wii U controller would have been astronomically high.

Most publishers basically say "fark it" at a certain point and stop updating their games because patch development, testing, and certification is just throwing away profit.

Think about it as the first step towards being able to play Wii Virtual Console games in the same way as the ones on the Wii U.

Ok here's my question: Are there and Wii or Wiiu games that actually make significant use of the motion controller?

It seems beyond Wii sports and Wii resort and the other two games Nintendo made to show of the technology every else seems to either run the classic controller or the wiimote sideways which when used that way is actually a pretty crappy controller.

Twilight Princess was basically Ocarina of Time done over again but with the ability to pretend he wiimote was a sword and swing it at shiat, iirc.  And I think some of the later Zelda games used it similarly.

But yeah, a lot of titles, especially the few ones that were ported over from PC or other systems, just used wiimote gestures as a substitute for certain buttons/keystrokes and functioned significantly better with the classic controller.

Mario Kart. Even though it's "easier" with a regular controller, you get a special icon for braving the motion controls, and they do work well.

Boom Blox, it's a great party game.

Beyond that, I agree that most are just crappy controller + waggle.

I have played a total of 3 WiiU games so far. The game pad is awesome. I can't wait for more.

There are plenty that are not, including some of the biggest hits on the system (for example: Super Smash Bros. Brawl).  There's really no reason they couldn't make the Game Pad emulate a Classic Controller while streaming a Wii game.

Sony actually didn't do all that bad in the current gen. They struggled at first, but at the end of the day they are basically tied with the Xbox 360 in terms of sales despite launching a year later, plus they are in a good position for the next generation. The Wii U is a much bigger problem for Nintendo.

Well, this generation is still young, and Nintendo hasn't really pulled out the big guns yet.

Besides which, even if the Wii U doesn't turn around, the 3DS is doing fantastic, so I really don't see Nintendo going anywhere.

How will Wii make a next generation console when their whole ploy was to go backwards?

2013-10-01 10:26:32 PM
This sounds like a good idea... but what good is having a Wii or VC game on the gamepad (which is awesome) if you have to use another controller?  They should just focus on getting the backlog of the Wii's VC titles ported over to Wii-U.

2013-10-01 10:28:02 PM
Evidently the update also causes many homebrew applications to display in 4:3 regardless of system settings, though some workarounds exist (apparently launching applications from USB Loader GX preserves aspect ratio settings).

Red Steel 2 was a ton of fun, and really made good use of the Motion Plus. It also worked surprisingly well for the Halo knock-off game Conduit 2 (once you get the hang of it and tweak the sensitivity to your liking the reticle control feels like playing an FPS with a mouse, which I prefer over an anolog stick). The No More Heroes Games were cool (the 2nd more so than the first).

In fact, come to think of it, it took publishers 2 tries to actually make good use of the hardware.

IMO the problem with the Wiimote is that what later came to be know as "motion plus" should have been there from the getgo. The difference in control between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword is total night and day. I think a rush to market put the first version out, which was pretty much a waggle stick. The motion plus was a massive improvement in its responsiveness.

As far as non motion games go, man was Xenoblade Chronicles awesome (as was The Last Story). It would be really cool to play those on my Wii U gamepad.

I tried that out on the pad last night, it looks great. But as you said we can't yet use the pad to control, so it's basically just a little monitor to play on, for now at least.

I could see the game looking really good on the gamepad. I'm not entirely sure what it would take to have the Wii emulator recognize the key inputs from the gamepad, but I hope that it wouldn't take much. I would love to chill on the couch on play XC with some headphones on.

Mario party, zelda (ymmv), mario galaxy off the top of my head.

It really is decent tech when used appropriately.

Also as to the remote being crap otherwise: the nunchuck addition covers that completely. Best controller imho. Shoulder and elbow freedom is incredible.

As always, ymmv.

Considering that a homebrew developer was able to make a GameCube game loader for the Wii U work with Playstation 3 controllers (wired or wireless), such compatibility should not actually be that difficult for the hardware manufacturer.

You serious? The PS3 was a slow starter but in the end a big success, and Sony go into the PS4 from a position of strength. The WiiU is just a disaster from start to finish and Nintendo may never make another full console,  but simply stick to handhelds from here on in.

Sony could be in the same position with the Playstation Vita and its inability to capitalize on the handheld market. The system is constantly being beaten by the 3DS, is failing to meet the sales of the PSP and has yet to spawn a title that has sold more than one million copies.

I agree that sony are in big trouble in handhelds, pretty much the same as nintendo in consoles.

Sony lost a crapload of money for years though, while Nintendo made profits with each unit sold. Remember, just because they sell a lot of units doesn't mean they're actually making money. Meanwhile, Nintendo has billions in the bank, so they're not in any financial danger whatsoever. If they did decide to not make another home console (doubtful) it would not be because they ran out of money. People were predicting the same doom and gloom with the 3DS, and it's a huge hit now. I think it's a little early for Nintendo to call it quits.

Several of the EA Sports titles for the Wii made significant use of them--the Tiger Woods golf games spring immediately to mind.

The WiiU is not going to be a success though, in any terms. Nintendoof course arent going anywhere as a company, the DS series sees to that! I just think maybe their days in the TV console market may be numbered.

 Xenoblade Chronicles

XC definitely was my favorite game out of everything on the Wii, it looks a hell of a lot better being played on the Dolphin emulator though. Almost a completely different game visually. (need something like 4.4 ghz to play flawless on an amd chip, slightly less on Intel chip)

The big thing I'm waiting on getting a WiiU for though is Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Currently just titled "X". It looks awesome and they are taking the game in awesome directions. It could blow away all the jrpg prospects on the other consoles as well, especially if the bastards print enough copies.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: Considering that the only fun games that have been on any Nintendo system ever have been first-party, yes.

Seriously?

I never owned a Wii, so I can't say much about Xenoblade Chronicles (though I hear it was excellent), but there were a few great games on the GameCube (e.g., Tales of Symphonia) and  lots of excellent games on the SNES.

Plus, most of the best stuff on the 3DS and DS has been from other companies.  The new Shin Megami Tensei is just the latest.  Third party games on Nintendo handheld systems have been excellent for a long time.

Do people who think that Nintendo is doomed seriously not remember how many times that same thing has been predicted, only for Nintendo to consistently and constantly turn around and prove them wrong?

Yeah, it had a rocky start.  So did the 3DS.  So did the PS3.

Pretty sure they'll be fine.

There's a reason Operation Rainfall existed, and was relatively successful. XC, TLS, and Pandora's Tower are all 3 great games that just came in a little too late in the console's life cycle, at least as far as US publishers were concerned.

I pre-ordered all 3 once I was able to, and don't regret it even slightly. I'm only sad PT didn't come with an artbook or something like the other 2 did.

On the topic at hand, I have a Wii U, I haven't applied the update yet, but I think I have to agree, playing Wii games on the tablet is good, but being able to use the tablet controls for the games would be better. I don't think it's out of the question for a future update to enable this functionality, though. Failing that i'll keep an eye on the homebrew community, whenever I get around to it, anyway.

This is the killer app for me for the WiiU and basically the only reason I'd ever purchase one.  I don't expect it out in America until 2015 at least though... if the WiiU is even alive by then.
