GWAR has consistently been one of the best things in the universe since the formation of the group.

I saw GWAR at Riot Fest last month. Idunno, it was kinda fun for about 2 songs, just to laugh at the absurdity, but it got old fast. I'll admit I'm not their target audience (I don't care for heavy metal in the slightest), but it just seemed an entire show of what teenagers think will "offend the masses".

Not really a GWAR fan, but that was cool... I would have to say the BEST GWAR experience I ever had was back in the 90's, I went to a bar in Scottsdale that played nothing but heavy metal for music, but at the same time just played random GWAR videos on the TVs, it didn't really matter if the songs matched or not, it just worked out perfectly...

Meh. I haven't had a chance to listen to the cover yet since I'm at work but I've only ever liked one GWAR song I've heard over the years, and their schtick has gotten somewhat stale seeing as how they've been doing it at least since the 90s when I first heard of them, quite possibly longer. It can be cool in small doses but just not my thing.

What is wrong with the A.V. Club's video player and why does it have no pause/play/advance functionality? Or any kind of control panel whatsoever?

Maybe I'm out of touch, but is it ridiculous to want control of my browser?

I'm pretty impressed by the Alpine cover of Radiohead.

2013-10-01 03:58:57 PM
I saw one of their shows in December of 2008 and it was really weird.  The whole thing was a mockup of the 2008 election seasons, with the candidates wrestling each other instead of having a vote.  The final battle came down to Hillary Clinton vs. John McCain, and McCain won.  Note that I said December above.  You know, well after the election.  I guess they just didn't want to rewrite it because Obama's head was rigged to pop off like a rockem sockem robot, but McCain's wasn't?

/ Yes, I am the nerd who expects historical accuracy from a GWAR show.  What of it?

I think it's a legitimate claim.  They've had a resurgence in popularity in recent years as hipsters have taken note of how ironically funny they are.  They play Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin almost every year, for christ's sakes.  That festival is full of hipsters.

GWAR, Richmond Virginia's greatest culteral export, and gift to the world in the past forty years.

Don't blame us for Dave Mathews, he's more of a Charlotsville thing.

In any case. GWAR's sound is best described as belonging to the DC Hardcore scene. After the initial push of the NY and london punk sound was done but people were still pissed, Punk got meaner and faster.

GWAR's contribution to all that was to theatricly skewer the effigies of a pop/political culture gone mad.

the shows are social commentary.

if you don't get that, then that is why you dont get GWAR.
and I'm not saying all that directly to you Gunny, I'm just using your comment as a spring board.

I've seen it spelled both ways, but you're right.  Early releases show it as two, more current and re-issues show it as one.

October '93, GWAR @ Bogart's in Cincy.  Worst pit of my life!  Awesome show, but bad pit to be a fat guy.  All the little skater punks kept trying to use my fat ass as a launching pad for their crowd surfing.  It was full-on in terms of the stage elements.  Gor-Gor, Crapapult, etc.  I caught a bag of shiat (well, mud) and slung it immediately back onstage, hitting a guitar square in the pickups!

I've seen Gwar many, many times, including the very last show at the original 9:30 Club in DC with the Meatmen. Too damn good. They used to just be fun, but at some point over the years they actually got good at playing music too.

Sorry

I haven't had Legend or, to be completely honest, the Hardywood. I have a couple of raging alcoholic beer enthusiast friends down in Richmond, and they rave about Gingerbread Stout. GWAR is really just a bunch of (former) art students' side project that took on a life all its own. The real guys are eclectic for their original surroundings (Virginia), but they were always intended to be outlandish more than offensive.

robertus: Cerebral Knievel: robertus: Cerebral Knievel: Gunny Highway: frepnog: Gunny Highway: Their early albums have an awesome punk sound (I dont know if you like punk) and are great.

i have been a GWAR fan, since, well, since GWAR became a thing.  I wouldn't call anything they ever did "punk".  Their early records were more a "we don't really know how to play our instruments" kind of sound that evolved into a sort of metal.

GOR GOR!

Fair enough.  The Death Piggy album I heard had a punk sound but maybe it is more of that "we dont really know" thing again.

/I really like that "dont know" sound.

GWAR, Richmond Virginia's greatest culteral export, and gift to the world in the past forty years.

*sigh*...

You've apperntly never had the Legend Brewery BB brown ale or Barleywine have you?

listen... I'm one of the brewers at Legend.. been working there 14 odd years now.. I've had a rather rough afternoon since the last time I posted in this thread...

I shiat you not... my hands are tore up because I got into a physical altercation with two daschunds..

As crazy as this shiat may sound. . I came home.. went to go pet my little dog, who hasn't been feeling well, he was sitting next to my mother...

just then, one dacshund leaps over and starts fighting with my dog, the other doxie leaps into the fray.because the first one attacked. I am now trying to pull my dog out of this fray while those two assholes are LATCHED ON TO THE EARS  of my dog! I am litteraly holding onto my dog and these two farkers are holding on for dear life fighting and frothing while my dog is screaming.

I just had to PUNCH two dacshunds in the face and kick them away from my dog. whom they were trying to kill because I dared pet him too close to my mother.

I now have three stitches in the tip of my left middle finger because of all this...

and... well.. I know you didn't mean anything by it..., and there is no way you could've known.. but, when I saw that you had put up a pictu ...

Sorry

I haven't had Legend or, to be completely honest, the Hardywood. I have a couple of raging alcoholic beer enthusiast friends down in Richmond, and they rave about Gingerbread Stout. Every time we see one another, there's an "oh shiat, I left your bottle at home" moment. I fear I am beginning to doubt them.

I shall point them forthwith to your establishment. They're always looking for good beers.

/Thanks for the TF
//I have a birthday coming up. I'll put in an order with them.

let them know they need to grab some Legend Harvest ale. it's fantastic and super rare. sold out before it was even finished. I'm looking at a row of 22ounce bottles in the display cooler behind the bar right now. and thats the only place I know for certain it can be found
the gingerbread stout from hardywood is a very good beer, dont get me wrong, but I still think they have issues with consistancy.. Ive had bottles that have tasted great, others that have tasted like coppertone sun tan lotion...

I had a sad last night, and I just need a little bit of a reach out, then there was just an.. awww MAN! thing. no hard feelings because I know none were intended and the TF gift was to reinforce that I had no hard feelings. as for the beer thing, The brewery I work for has been doing its thing for 20 years now. a lot of the beer geeks are running around for new hotness. and thats fine.. we make the standard go to craft beer, the daily drinker you take for granted, the other folks make the boutique and desert beer.

Back to the GWAR stuff! its hard to not be involved in the Richmond music and art scene and not have a few run ins with GWAR.

I am in the video for meat sandwich... if but so breifly... if y'all go to the youtubes and look at that video, wait for when the "ragnarockers" are marching to the grills, right at the end of the line, just as the scene changes BAM big teased red haired guy in a biker jacket.... that's me!

favorite recent GWAR album has been From Hell the GWAR official rock opera
