I guess that works for bad writing. Writers who follow "show don't tell" avoid emotional words such a "fear" and get the reader to feel fear with situations such as a rabid wolf trying to break into a remote cabin.

Once upon a time there were two guys.

The first guy said to the other, "I'm thirsty. Want to go get a beer?"

The second guy responded, "Why are you always wanting to go out and drink? Why can't you just enjoy hanging out together without getting drunk? Do you think I'm so boring that you can only put up with me if you're drunk? And you always get so blasted and start hitting on women in the bar and I'm just left sitting by myself at the bar with no one to talk to. How do you think that makes me feel?"

Just kidding. The second guy actually responded, "You bet. Let's go."

And they lived happily ever after.
