Ray Parker Sr. should have taught his son more about timeliness in opportunism.

Sounds like Ray Parker, Jr. needs a new drug

It should all go to THE BAR-KAYS

How they are not mentioned in this whole thing is ridiculous.  Ghostbusters is overwhelmingly a Soulfinger rip-off

I guess Ray forgot all about Huey Lewis.

And Richie Blackmore was NOT the first to come up with the riff for Smoke on the Water....

I'm of the opinion that Ray Parker didn't so much plagarize...it just happened to be released in the same time frame as Huey Lewis.  Put that song on the air 15yrs later and it probably wouldn't have raised an eyebrow.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that the song is a rip-off of Huey Lewis.  I guess that must not be widely known.

Thank goodness for this thread, or I would have never gone to research what really happened with Huey Lewis.  This is the story, as it turns out.

Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr for stealing "I Want a New Drug".  Huey Lewis was sued by M for stealing "Pop Muzik".

Ray Parker ended up suing Huey Lewis for breaking confidentiality after it came out that Huey, in fact, won his case.

So it seems everyone was ripping off Huey Lewis the whole time.  Who knew?

Ray Parker Jr.'s early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Ghostbusters came out in '84, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The song has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the chorus a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Ray has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Not sure I hear the Ghostbusters theme in there, but awesome song nonetheless. I love this video. It's as if The Warriors were in a band instead of a gang...

Nancy Wilson once told a story that Iggy Pop came up to her and Ann after a Heart show and accused them of ripping him off with the song "Baracuda". Nancy told him no, they ripped off Zeppelin.

Do I get a cut for having to listen to that song on the radio both in it's original presentation and in it's shameless use in almost every radio and TV commercial produced in 1984.

To be fair, Lewis had been approached to compose the theme of Ghostbusters first. I suspect when he turned the filmmakers down because of scheduling conflicts he was bitter that they then (allegedly) asked Parker to come up with a Lewis-sounding song.

Zepplin stealing is a bit of a stretch though, the band was gonna list them but their manager stopped them from giving any credits away because it meant less money for them and ultimately him as well. This is the same huge man who was a dick to promoters, shoved people who wouldn't get out of his way, and was overall just a huge douchebag. Jimmy Page was apologetic to artists who influenced and who they had based a few of their songs but ultimately saying they are thieves is crazy since most of their best songs were original, they hits I wouldn't consider their best. Also I forget the documentary I saw but they wound up paying those old blues artists later.

I still don't know how the bar-kays deserve anything though.
