I don't see how this is possible. If there was that much support for a clean CR in the caucus, it would easily pass the Hastert Rule.

Sounds like the sane (relatively speaking) part of the GOP is waiting to see how big of a bus the Teatards want to get thrown under..

OK so there's probably 100-120 who do support it, and they're floating the 175 number just to get their on-the-fence cohorts to squirm when asked by a reporter..

If Boner puts a clean CR up for a vote before midnight tonight, he WILL get primaried. Between the teabaggers (who honestly believe that agreeing with President Obama on so much a the time of day or the color of the sky is tantamount to treason), and the Koch brothers (who hate President Obama with every fiber of their being just as much as the teabaggers do, but have tens of billions of dollars at their disposal), Boner is in the difficult and unenviable position of choosing between keeping his job and allowing the government to perform its basic day-to-day operations unimpeded.

"The combination of those two factors --- a close Republican majority and united Democratic opposition --- gives those 30 Republicans their power. In a situation where Democrats nearly unanimously oppose a bill, the 30 can make the difference between success or failure for Boehner. If they stick together, Boehner can't win. "

See above.

But Democrats wouldn't oppose a clean CR. If a CR clean was on the floor, it'd pass 375-60 or something.

He's speaker of the House, his only reaction to such a threat should be "Come at me bro!". Instead of squirming he should assert himself and be confident, it'll end any chance any primary opponent has before things even start.

At this point, Boehner is farked no matter what he does. The Tea Party wants blood, they're listening to Ted Cruz more than Boehner, and they're clearly going to want one of their own to be Speaker next time out, and the easiest way to do that is to eliminate Boehner so the path is clear for a Tea Party Speaker to barge in. Boehner might as well tell them to fark off now just so that he can save his seat, never mind his Speaker gig.

Not to mention he raises lots of cash for others. The tea tards can be dumb but if they tried to primary him they'd wind up getting no money or support from the rest of the party. Even the cray crays don't want to have that kind of a fight.

Personally, I'd have Pelosi call him with an offer - straight up or down vote on the CR, debt ceiling, farm bill, and sequester end on the condition that the Democrats won't give any real money to the guy who runs against Boehner and vote for Boehner if the GOP retains the House after 2014.

Promise no electoral opposition but make him break the Hastert rule and own it. He's got enough of a war chest and strong name recognition to survive a Teatard.

And then if you really want to dick with him, you stab the little weasel in the back. Sterling endorsements during primary season from Barack Obama thanking Mr Boehner for seeing eye to eye and doing what both of them knew was best for America. If he survives, you honor your deal and point out that the President didn't hurt election chances. If he doesn't, you're no longer bound by the agreement since the Democrats agreed to not fund an opponents against John Boehner. They made no such deal with regards to a beatable Teatard.

This is ultimately what will probably happen. Whether it happens by midnight is up for debate.

They will pass a clean CR and enough Democrats will vote for it that they will only need about 20 of the most moderate Republicans on board so the rest of their crazy caucus can vote against it so they can campaign on it.

The question is not "How could another Republican replace Boehner in the house?" but merely, "How could another Republican beat Boehner in the primary?"  Teabaggers are quite willing to primary a solid Republican incumbent even if it means throwing a formerly "safe" Republican seat to the Democrats.  There were races like that in the 2012 election.

When Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, one of the Republicans committed to defunding or delaying Obamacare, appeared on "Meet the Press," he was asked whether he was willing to vote for a resolution that funded the government but did not touch Obamacare.

Isn't that what the first one was? It funded the government, but didn't touch Obamacare?
