I've always had this pet theory that you could get 20% of people to agree or approve of anything.

Apparently Congress sucks badly enough that they've managed to disprove it.

Aristocles: Lemme ask this... you know how the gov't shut down is such a bad thing because people won't get their ss and medicare benefits.. well, let's say in the future there's another shut down... will everyone be on the hook for the full cost of health insurance premiums? Since the govt will have been shut down, how will people get their Obamacare.

This just highlights the point that Obamacare is a turd sandwich.

Or they could just delay the checks that get sent to healthcare providers.  I know logic is hard for you and all, but that one's a no-brainer.

Did you really just ask how people would get the insurance they have contracted through a private company if the government shuts down?

Did you also consider what would happen if the government shut down and there weren't enough beanie babies for your potato?

I can understand how desperate Republicans are to stop Obama-care.  Once it becomes obvious that it is successful, it will not only become obvious that they were lying about Obama-care, it will be obvious that the whole "Government can't do anything right" narrative that their entire philosophy is built on will go down in flames.

How do you know that?

How does anyone know what the government priorities will be when Obamacare is in effect? It's certainly conceivable that some d-bags could shut down the govt in the future and leave the people stuck with the full cost of Obamacare mandated plans... Also, if they didn't send the providers checks, wouldn't that mean ... ta da! No Doctors!

Thanks BOB!

You seem to think that "government shutdown" is a permanent condition.  Here's a little hint: it's happened before, and businesses that receive government subsidies (like hospitals, which take payment from Medicare/Medicaid) and insurance companies (which will receive subsidies under the Affordable Care Act for providing insurance to low-income Americans) survived them.

2013-09-30 08:15:21 PM
This was NEVER a good idea.

But I think the GOP leadership was in an awkward position of trying to serve two masters, neither of whom would take disagreement lightly, and they want opposite things. So they're opting for the possibility of losing in the general election rather than the certainty of losing in a primary. Not that it would save them any more than it could have saved the House Democrats in 2010. It's just possible that the GOP will lose seats in the mid-term. My money is on gaining seats, but if one were to come up with a scenario where the Democrats had a chance, this is a pretty good start to the next 13 months of campaigning.

Well, it IS his fault.

The problem here is that he won. Obama won and got his health care law passed. It goes into action no matter what republicans do.
After not getting it killed or defended, republicans settled for a delay (which won't prevent signups or people from seeing how wonderful it is). Its a small price for victory. Mostly political, so the right can go home and say it tried.
If Obama care works out then people won't remember this drama by the time the law is mandatory.

The only way there would be a problem is if there is a devil hidden in the details of law.
...but that won't happen, so why the fuss?

Run the clock down to midnight, angrily sign everything, and everyone gets back to golf or whatever till the next debt ceiling debate. Then We don't have to live through a week of the media claiming that panda-cam going offline is a sign of the farking purge.
Win-win.

Uncertainty has a substantial effect on the economy. There HAS been a lot of uncertainty in the economy for the last five years. This certainly doesn't make things better. Government may not be able to do too many things to drive the economy, but it sure as Hell can make it worse pretty trivially.
