(Slate)   The House GOP appears to be settling on a final budget offer where the only thing they want is an amendment which would do nothing except unfairly screw over Congressional staffers. Literally, it does nothing else. Government by spite   (slate.com) divider line 132

But this has become a right wing talking point, like death panels, so they need to pander to it. So, all you dedicated House GOP staffers who have been in the much and fighting the good fight for your bosses? They just farked you for no reason.

If the democrats give in and concede this point to the republicans as a compromise.  That is awesome.  Unless of course you are a congressional staffing weasel.

Democrats hate it - they are the ones trying to fix what was a drafting error. But they might have no choice. I would hope that the Democrats in Congress would come together to agree to pay for the funding gap for their own staffers out of their own pockets. That would be good PR.

Serious question - if Boehner just up and resigned as speaker, would anything actually change? He appears to have no control over anything.

Obama is speaking in 5 minutes, if anyone is curious. Live stream at WhiteHouse.gov.

He should replace Kevin McCarthy as Whip, but honestly - who the hell would take the job, trying to ride herd on these politically suicidal nutjobs?

Plus, the speaker has these round medallions they give visitors. I know because I used to work with a guy who went to DC to lobby for gay rights and came back with one from Nancy Pelosi (when she was speaker).

In my life I have never coveted something more than that medallion.

They're not going with the Vitter Amendment, they're trying to push back the individual mandate by a year now.

Apparently GOP staffers are ok with getting screwed:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2013/09/30/house_republicans_say_t he ir_staffs_are_ready_to_get_screwed_on_health_care.html

Key quote is this: "a lot of them are saying that if this is the way we can delay this bill, I think they're willing to do that." Of course, doing this WILL NOT DELAY the bill, but who cares, right?

I'm better known for the hookers thing, but I also have this terrible amendment.

And a giant mouth. Disagree with him, he'll swallow you whole. He can unhinge his jaw like a giant constrictor.

Moderate House Republicans who want to fund the government with no strings attached are working to line up votes against a House GOP plan to renew federal coffers while chipping away at Obamacare, multiple GOP sources involved in the effort tell CNN.
Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pennsylvania, Rep. Peter King, R-New York, and others are feverishly making calls to stage what would effectively be a revolt.

From CNN. So, it's probably false. But, still.

Watch the vote on the floor right now. There's 6 minutes left. Right now no one has crossed party lines, but apparently Steve King has 10 votes with him and is whipping for more. CSPAN has never been more thrilling.

Also being reported by Strong and Costa at NRO, who are both well sources within the GOP. It's real.

From his quote, it sounds like King wants this to be over: no debt ceiling fight either; focus on winning elections instead.

Wow got to hand it to Republicans: they always remember when someone pissed them off in the past, even when it was other Republicans.  Peter King is still pissed about the hurricane funding from earlier this year and he is probably pretty safe with this move since he is from NY.  This is nothing more than score settling for him, but I'll take it.  What a blow this would be, the Republicans would have no clout on anything for months at the very least.  Wow

Well. That didn't take long.

Probably effectively the same as having a Dem speaker.  After all, that's going to be the only chance of getting a moderately conservative piece of legislation through the house.

I've got serious problems with John Boehner.

But his secretary?  I've got no beef with her, and no desire to see her harmed because of all this mess.
Which is apparently more than John Boehner can say.

Republicans: a people who gleefully screw over their own friends and coworkers if it makes a good (to the ears of the mouth-breathing talk radio addicts) sound bite.  Look up 'buddy-farker' in the dictionary, and you'll see their photo.
