This is my new mop. George, my friend, he gave me this mop. This is a pretty good mop. It's not as good as my first mop. I miss my first mop, but this is still a good mop. Sometimes you just hafta take what life gives ya, 'cause life is like a mop and sometimes life gets full of dirt and crud and bugs and hairballs and stuff... you, you, you gotta clean it out. You, you, you gotta put it in here and rinse it off and start all over again and, and sometimes, sometimes life sticks to the floor so bad you know a mop, a mop, it's not good enough, it's not good enough. You, you gotta get down there, like, with a toothbrush, you know, and you gotta, you gotta really scrub 'cause you gotta get it off. You gotta really try to get it off. But if that doesn't work, that doesn't work, you can't give up. You gotta, you gotta stand right up. You, you gotta run to a window and say, "Hey! These floors are dirty as hell, and I'm not gonna take it any more!"

Yeah, they don't get that usually higher frequencies mean less transmission range.

Per a given amount of power, this is still true. Unfortunately with DTV the VHF bands seem to be complete shiat for reception, compared to the UHF. Like many other places, we had a High VHF analog channel and were given a UHF channel to broadcast during the transition. Remember the days of broadcasting both analog and digital?

Most of us planned to convert our analog to a digital after analog went away, so we could continue to be "Newschannel 3" or "ActionNews 7".

Turns out that the High VHF channels converted to digital at the power level the FCC suggested didn't carry for SHIAT. We actually went back to our UHF transmitter, because everyone could pick *that* one up. Even after we *doubled the power* of the VHF, it still doesn't carry as far in digital as the UHF does.

Used to be the other way 'round, when a bit of static or multipath was just a ghost or a crackle, instead of in digital when multipath means NO PICTURE FOR YOU, BUD.

Now the broadcast channel makes no difference, because the way the datastream is arranged the channel number you see when you tune to an off air ATSC signal can be *any damn number you want*. (shrug)

\we're broadcasting on a UHF and our channel says a high VHF number

Any Pie Left: The reporter's lack of science fundamentals notwithstanding, the thrust of the article is about the business implications of removing the UHF "discount".  By limiting the number of stations that can be owned by a media group, the change has massive political implications for republican-leaning scum sucking miserable rat-bastard companies like Sinclair broadcasting.

trappedspirit: The transition from analog to digital spectrum has actually made UHF signals stronger than VHF.

WTF

Indeed.  The lower the frequency, the farther it tends to go because it is attenuated less by the atmosphere and objects like trees or buildings.  Go down far enough, and the radio waves actually reflect off of the ionosphere or are tunneled through the troposphere.  It isn't uncommon to get AM signals from a different continent if conditions are right.

Because of these differences, there is a huge difference in the amount of power required to punch through the atmosphere.  In the US, VHF-Lo (ch2-6) stations are limited to 45KW and VHF-Hi (ch7-13) are limited to 160KW.  Canada limits VHF-Lo/Hi to 100KW/325KW.  Both countries limit UHF to 1MW.

Even then, UHF reception can suck when it is raining or snowing.  And if your antenna points through trees, your signal really drops with UHF.

/FYI, very few stations stayed on VHF-Lo when they went digital
//you need really large antennas, the band is plagued by RF noise, ch6 is close to low FM radio stations and there were concerns that the FCC power limits were too low

Hysterical. What was the deal with that? how did boston get two PBS stations?

The worst was I wasn't always strong enough to turn the knob so i'd turn real hard but then it would overshoot and end up some channel higher. So I'd have to turn back but might have the same problem. My hand and wrist would start to get tired and I'd just hope to land on something that wasn't static.

Sometimes Villa Allegre on channel 44 was the best you could get so you settled for it.
