Sigh....

My entire lab at the USGS basically shuts down...meaning I can get no additional samples to help with finishing up my thesis and degree...until things start back up.  Good god this is frustrating.  I have a lot of colleagues at the USGS and various national labs that will be basically on hold until further notice.  so aggravating.  congress needs a good biatch slappin' reality check.

Nah, this is deemed an essential function.

things that will not be touched by a shutdown:

NSA
FBI
CIA
ATF
Homeland Security
Federal money to local police precincts to help them spy on the citizens
Congressional Pay
Congressional "fact finding" trips to beautiful beaches
Federal Matching funds for political campaigns
Climate Change research
Government contracts
Corporate welfare
Obamacare
Shark Sandwich and Caviar Tuesday at the White House

things that will be touched by a shutdown:
services used by poor and middle class people, that only cost a fraction of the above

The bolded items will, in fact, be affected by the shutdown. Civil servants are going on furlough; "excepted" contractors like security will only be able to work with pay as long as their companies still have FY13 dollars to pay them with, then they'll have to work sans paycheck until gov't is back in business; other contractors go home, no pay. University grantees are expected to continue working, but those of us with offices in gov't space or needing access to gov't resources like supercomputers will have to find somewhere else to go/something else to do with our time.

Nah, my good friend is a grants manager for the government. He approvals federal money for like "Studies to determine effect of global warming on the seasonal migration pattern of the North African dung beetle."

He has been deemed essential personnel. The grants will keep coming.

He "approvals" money, eh? Care to name his agency?

I work for part of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. What I wrote is what we were told at an all-hands meeting today. Grants don't "keep coming" when the support staff that process the paperwork are on furlough. Nothing is "essential" to NASA that doesn't contribute to the protection and preservation of safety and property (i.e., satellites and support for the International Space Station). I'm unconvinced that a program manager at any other agency is so important that they get to keep working.

That panda is typical liberal welfare queen and needs to be forced to get a job and stop relying on tax payers to purchase its sushi and lobster dinners.
