I didn't really now people self identified as a hipster, I thought it was more of a slur. Or maybe it is and they're being ironic.

I don't know that "stoner/surfer" can be equated with "hipster."  Though the town of Santa Cruz itself has veered far more into hipsterdom in recent years than one would've though possible.  If the problem ever gets out of hand, though, the hipster overpopulation could be quickly contained by a tactical strike on the Verve Coffee on Pacific Avenue, which any given time seems to contain about 50% of the Santa Cruz hipster community all in one place.

Benevolent Misanthrope: List fails without Oberlin and Smif.

Oberlin is more of the militant leftist college, though there are a lot of music majors there that would warrant them being on the list.  Kenyon deserves to be on the list though.  That's the writing/art college of the group.  Lots of English (really pre-law) majors, art majors, etc.

Aren't Hipsters pretty much the modern equivalent of what Yuppies were in the 80's? Not literally, of course, but still sharing that same sort of thing where they just get under your skin.

thecpt: Kenyon? Didn't Obama go there?

Quick story about Kenyon College. This tiny little division 3 school has a $70 million athletic facility: Olympic swimming and diving pool, indoor football field, indoor track, indoor tennis court, indoor everything. On the wall in the lobby is a list of donors that made this place possible, including one $30 million donation from an 'anonymous' donor. On the opposite wall, there is a list of notable alumni. First on the list: Paul Newman.

NYU? Uh, no. We have Stern.... and tons of nerds and preppies nowadays.

IF you have to give it to a NYC school, its obviously Pratt, School of Visual Arts, or FIT. At least, those are the ones NYers consider "hipster".

You'd think if Mr Newman gave 30mil they would've built a race track, maybe put some nice hi performance cars on it for student use or something...

I thought "hipster" had something to do with Jews.

You ever notice that hipster guys often wear hats? And hardly anybody else wears hats unless they are  "gimme hats"  that brand their wearers as definitely not a hipster.

Yuppies and Hippies will admit what they were. That is the difference between then and Hipsters.

True Hippies were too stoned out of their gourd to care what people thought about them, and had real issues they wanted to overcome (segregation/racism, sexism/feminism, etc).

Yuppies were too busy trying to climb the social ladder to give any real thought to what they were doing.

Hipsterdom, on the other hand, its a completely manufactured image, and most will try to deny their participation in it.

NYU is either (a) asians who dont give a shiat (and rightfully so) about the social scene, or (b) trust-fund kids from CT and Long Island who play hipster-dress up. The only real difference between them and "real" hipsters is they dont have that 12-hours-a-week shift at the coffee house. The NYU bunch dont even bother with pretending to work.

FIT is stuffed with lots of CT and LI crap too, but that mostly JAP girls who share apartments with each other in Murray Hill and all dress in the same clothes.

Pratt/SVA i'm not as familiar with.

2013-09-30 03:22:24 PM
I'm confused*. Is Urban Outfitters hipster or not?

#8: When the founder of Urban Outfitters is on your Board of Trustees, you know your school has hipster cred.

#1: "Your typical NYU student turns up her nose at the three Urban Outfitters on campus in favor of real vintage..."

/doesn't mean I care about hipsters one way or the other...

LemSkroob: Pratt/SVA i'm not as familiar with.

Dude, Pratt is the ORIGINAL hipster school.

It's an art school in BROOKLYN. It's satellite campus is on 14th Street. Those kids were hipster in the 90s.

I went to an entirely unhipster university just before the hipster era began, but I can recognize this as old people being angry that young people act young.

A list of the least hipster universities would have been far more compelling.

Some of the children of the 60's hippies made for the first wave hipsters.  Who do you think made the B-52s and Dee-Lite popular?

Not denying that Texas shouldn't be on the list (MA, 93), but there are a lot of rednecks there, too.  It all balances out.

Also, Men's V-neck T-shirts should be banned. Seriously.

If Dr. Demento is your idea of original hipster, than sure. Also, I was seriously hoping Reed would not have been mentioned in this thread. ...but ya know... I kind of expected it.

I went to a small East Texas university. To probably haven't heard of it. Unfortunately neither have any employers.
