Cool.

I always liked this vid....you're hanging out in your boat, and suddenly a new island rises from the sea.

Yes, but is there non-Euclidean geometry on this island?

2013-09-30 03:06:52 PM
I think it's just the island from Lost.  Someone turned the stupid frozen donkey wheel.

2013-09-30 03:12:21 PM
Did the island contain any structures of geometrically impossible architecture?

Pakistan gets three new islands following earthquake

NEW DELHI: Pakistan has just got three brand new islands - thanks to a major earthquake. When the shock of the temblor subsided on Tuesday, people living in the coastal town of Gwadar were stunned to see a new island in the sea.

That's not all. Two other islands have come up along the Balochistan coast.

They only cost 350 lives and 20k houses, what a steal!

I'm curious as to exactly how much methane was released into the atmosphere from this underground pocket.

Okay, I've got to ask this. People die. Disease, famine, other humans, stupidity, war (but I repeat myself), and so on. The fact of life is that no matter HOW rich you are, you're going to die. Death is inevitable.

So, why is it we get all butthurt and wig out about it? Yes, it's sad. But can we not be glad that they went quickly and didn't know what happened, celebrate their lives, and move on rather than act like the world is going to end because of it? I mean, come on. Life is neither sacred nor a scarce commodity, and wouldn't the dead themselves (barring japanese horror movies) want their living relatives to remember them fondly and be happy, not spend the rest of their life on crusades against death?

I "hate" to biatch about this all the time ;) but why choose about the least informative article in the world on a subject instead of pretty much any other article from around the world chosen at random?  The following is from the Daily Fail for FSM sake:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2433658/Pakistans-new- e arthquake-island-emitting-flammable-gas-killing-sea-life.html">http:/ /www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2433658/Pakistans-new-e arthquake-island-emitting-flammable-gas-killing-sea-life.html

It is missing the completely unimpressive small dot on a satellite maps, but has a lot more content including some nice video of people on the island and a little story about them setting it on fire.  Because that's what you do when you discover something new -  "I wonder if we can burn this farker..."

Somewhere in Pakistan, a real estate agent's ears are burning.

Possibly because they've been set on fire by the Taliban, but still.

That sure looks like a giant hunk of rock that's fairly well supported. Not like the islands usually created by volcanoes. I'm not sure why he seems to think it will erode as quickly,

I love those scroll before/after pics. I don't know what they call them, but they're a cool way to do this. The first one I saw was before/after pics when a local oil pipeline here in Salt Lake burst and totally polluted a lake in a park here. Being able to scrub back and forth really does give you a better perspective than just looking side by side.

Because he is rehashing conventional wisdom and throwing it on the web as fast as he can, as evidenced by the continuing updates.  Now I like that about the medium... it allows for it.  But in the end he is still not a geologist.

Yeah, but this is Pakistan, so who the fark cares about those rag heads anyway?

Oh, you mean this is recruiting ground for future turirrists who want to come and kill us all?

Fark, man - send them all the tents we got - it's fall, Cabela's will be having a closeout to make room for ice-drinking ice-fishing tents
