Well, at least they're admitting this time that the saints are canonized because a pope likes them, not because of miracles, necessarily.

Seriously - am I the only one who finds the whole damn thing absurd?

iheartscotch: John the XXIII? Sure, he called Vatican 2: Electric Boogaloo; but, he really didn't do much else. And it took another pope to finsh it.

John Paul II, single handly, broke communisum's hold on Poland.

Well, Lech Walesa helped a skosh, as did the fundamnetal insupportability of the Soviet economic model in a rapidly globalizing economy...

I do find it funnt that TFA seems to think JP II was a "conservative" pope.  Towards the end of this life he did seem to drift right ward (I suspect a combo of advancing age, declining faculties and  Cardinal Ratso whispering in his ear like Grimma Wormtongue frankly), but on balance he was as revolutionary a Pope as John XXIII, and completely modernized and tranformed the very idea of the papacy, and excommunicated the uber-tradionlist Lefeverbist bishops that Pope Benny tried to rehabilitate until one of them started spouting neo-nazi holocaust denial crap.

I still get chills when I see that Statue of Alexander VI outside the Sistene Chapel, the one of him Dunking on Martin Luther with the caption ""Tum scio vere et manifeste protestans me perfectionem. Stetit coram nobis imminet terræ, ab omni opere suo, sicut leges artis, et nesciebam, sicut patet profecto et illa vita non est opus artis, et tempus durare non posset. "
