Article is gay.

2013-09-30 01:29:12 PM
Smarter dressed, maybe.

married or unmarried

The good news is that research means there are no gay people on Fark.com.

Nice.

So you're saying it's smarter than straight reporting?

Cause or effect?

Valiente: Smarter dressed, maybe.

This wins the thread right there.  No need for further posts.

Sounds like confirmation bias met projection and 9 months later this guy popped out.

So if I take a johnson to the jaw, it makes me smarter?

Are these the same 'scientists' that discovered dolphins are stupid (see Fark a few days ago) or that blacks are dumber than Asians?

Good jerb!

/maybe every segment has some very bright people and some idiots and mostly in between.  Nah.

Yep. Someone is deep in that closet.

Ouch.

2013-09-30 01:35:07 PM
How about the fact that well educated and intelligent people who are gay are much more likely to be open about their orientation and the dullards who are gay are more likely to keep it a secret because their crappy job, lousy social standing, and church membership would be at risk if they came out.

2013-09-30 01:35:12 PM
If Slate published an article stating "Water is wet" I'd insist on doing my own research.

FloydA: Pincy: Article is gay.

So you're saying it's smarter than straight reporting?

In that case the article is bi because it can't make up which side of the fence it's on.

2013-09-30 01:35:38 PM
Smarter, probably not. More fabulous, absolutely.

Of the 24 winners this year, at least three are openly gay, meaning gay people are  significantly overrepresented among the genius pool.

Or, the amount of gay people in the population is significantly more then believed.

2013-09-30 01:37:18 PM

lectos: So if I take a johnson to the jaw, it makes me smarter?

In some cases, yes.  For example, I've been told that if you have sex with me, just once, you'll be smart enough to never want to do that again.

2013-09-30 01:37:30 PM
If they're so smart, why'd so many catch AIDS?
We get why so many heteros got AIDS... they're all idiots.

FTFA: Some scientists speculate that the same genetic factors that cause homosexuality in one gender also induce hyperfertility in the other, a theory called sexually antagonistic selection.  A gay man might be at an evolutionary dead end, in other words, but his sisters will be blessed with extreme fecundity, more than making up the balance. Homosexuality, according to this theory, isn't some evolutionary defect: It's a biological boon.

Or, as several of my same-sex couple friends have done, they can have kids on their own through other methods.  I have lesbian friends who have been artificially inseminated and gay friends who have used their semen to artificially inseminate a surrogate mother.

2013-09-30 01:38:31 PM
Correlation != Causation, and all that. I think it's likely that more educated people are on average less likely to have harsh stigma attached to coming out from their peers/families. Poor and/or undereducated people might not have the same incentives to come out, as they would likely face harsher opposition.

Education in relation to attitudes about homosexuality.

Indiana's "Pope" Mike Pence pedals his anti-gay idiocy as "pro business."

Basically there are a lot of very creative gay people and there is a lot of businesses that couldn't care less about the sexuality of employees as long as they're good.  So making the state anti-gay is about as stupid as you can be if you are actually pro business.

2013-09-30 01:39:11 PM
And yet they're always putting it in the wrong hole.

Possibly. I've been doing it for years and I am pretty good at math and stuff.

2013-09-30 01:40:53 PM
I tend to agree with the article's conclusion.  Just think how much more I could accomplish if I wasn't thinking about pussy all the time.

2013-09-30 01:42:36 PM
Over-exadgerated gender-traits(including attraction) represent a hormonal imbalance that is (statistically) inhibitive to high intelligence.  If you filtered the pool out of people who consider themselves hypermasculine(or very feminine), you'd probably normalize the dataset and homosexuals wouldn't show any substantive average IQ difference.

//ad-hoc hypothesis that isn't intended as a basis for judging other people.
///Please don't judge people on singular traits.

I imagine there are more straight people with MAs/MSs/MEds and PhDs than gay people. However, it's hard to say who does better in the various programs, and...nobody gives a rat's tiny ass what I'm on about.

That being said--HOLY CRAP! I always knew that I was just smarter than my straight brothers. I don't give a flying fark if you have a problem with me listing accolades, but here goes nothing (and remember, my straight brothers didn't get any of these):

- Highest performance ever seen in the state on gifted and talented intake testing
- 3.4 high school GPA (on a scale of 4) compared to brothers' 3.2 and 2.8
- Quiz Bowl (trivia competition) team captain, two years in a row
- College Honors Society
- Actually graduated college with a BA and an unassociated AS (which, frankly, was a throwaway)
- Graduate school, biatches

Therefore, by my own limited case study, yes gay people are smarter than straight people.

Haters, hate.

I don't know if they actually are more intelligent, or if they just spud that way due to their accent, like British people.

Author of TFA obviously isn't a member of that pool if they think that statement is even close to accurate.

Of course. Who would willingly deal with women if they could find a way around it?

Seriously though, what a stupid farking anecdote to start with. 2 of the 3 openly gay grant recipients are black. Are black people disproportionately gayer?

Well, I'm gonna be a hater on anyone that treats anecotes like data.  Luckily for you, the article includes actual data that justifies the hypothesis, so I can't rail on you too hard.

Eh, if you look at the studies that say 10% of people are gay, it's really that 10% of people have some homoerotic tendencies, and most of them lean heterosexual.

I invited it on myself, so...I don't really mind. As an historian, though, I have to rely on anecdotes as evidence in more than a few cases, so I'm kind of used to it, I suppose.

Ha! I said the same thing last weekend...My brother's friend dragged me to karaoke night (I hate that shiat) in a tiny gay bar and it was earlier in the evening, no women yet- I was the only chick there. It was awesome...turns out karaoke is fun as hell when every third chick isn't trying to drunkenly warble to Bonnie Raitt's Let's Give Them Something To Talk About. Turns out, karaoke doesn't suck, karaoke with women sucks!*

*disclaimer...any chicks here are probably awesome to do this with, but I don't know y'all and while my girlfriends are awesome-karaoke with them sucks.

I would've bought this ... before they started making such a big deal about wanting to be married.

Dumb asses.

Not so fast there... FTA:
Of the 24 winners this year, at least three are openly gay, meaning gay people are significantly overrepresented among the genius pool.

His justification for "significantly overrepresented" is found here, where a study investigated self-reporting rates of LGBT identity. As noted there:
... there was a pretty big generational gap. 6.4 percent of Americans aged 18 to 29 identified themselves as LGBT, and the percentage sharply declined from there. Self-identified LGBT Americans include 3.2 percent of Americans aged 30-49, 2.6 percent of those between 50 and 64, and just 1.9 percent of those over 65.
This data is then combined to get an overall 3.4 percent for people who are LGBT at all.

But that's fundamentally flawed... Are we really supposed to believe that those self-reporting rates accurately reflect sexuality? That 98% of over-65s are actually heterosexual, rather than that a bunch are closeted due to it being illegal in many states for most of their lives? And that rates of heterosexuality have been in a strong decline over mere decades?

Or, more likely, the study only measures how comfortable people are with reporting sexuality, and is useless for attempting to accurately identify rates of heterosexuality or non-heterosexuality.

As an aside, the 3/24 is awfully close to the Kinsey ~10% rate. Maybe they're not overrepresented in the genius pool at all.

Oddly enough, my straight male friends are the people you would least want to do karaoke with, but I'll be damned if that night at the gay bar was anything but the funnest time I have ever had with them.

(Equally fun: Watching one straight friend flirt with the gay bartender for free liquor...and taping it. And then recording him drunkenly grinding on another gay guy. Not fun: sharing a bed with him that night and waking up to find him trying to spoon me.)

In my experience (and biased opinion), gays tend to be smarter than straights... except when they are stupid, in which case there is no dumb quite like gay dumb.

Probably the most fun they ever had at a bar too. Gay bars are on average nicer than hetero bars that cater to the same age.
