The only valid concern is expense.  Schools are already short on dollars.  If they can't swing it for whatever reason, the cost of implementing the program locally should be adjusted by the people driving the program

Well after you get off the Obamaphone regarding your Obamacare, you can also get an ObamaCar under the new ride sharing program, drive on the ObamaHighway, and then dance at the ObamaShack which is a little place where we get together.

Can we perhaps get a list of these schools that hate children so that nobody makes the mistake of accidentally sending their child to one of them?

Man, this iceberg sure has a small tip.  Not sure what you guys are complaining about!

Because lots of poor kids get lunch for free or cheaper than a pack lunch would be and if they get fat, we pay their medical bills.

I eat lunch with my kids a few times a month, I have no complaints, it is pretty decent food and plenty of it.

I am not saying it is a bad idea, but it isn't the purpose of the lunch program. If the school was losing money I would be sympathetic, but complaining not profiting as much? That is just stupid.

super_grass: So is this eliminating the fast food that they pass for a "wholesome meal" at schools?

Yes.

It's still only a minor improvement.

They should have targeted Sysco and similar food service suppliers and given them a subsidy or tax break to provide the schools they do business with something better than prison food.

Growing up, I went to school with a packed lunch every day.  It isn't hard to do.  Never had a problem with people trying to steal it, either.  And I occasionally brought cans of orange "freedom" juice to school, too.  Even on Fridays.

Maybe these folks are complaining because they're on a subsidized lunch and can't afford to bring it from home, though.  Beggars can't be choosey, though.

[csb]
I think I forgot my lunch twice over the years, and I was provided a school lunch instead.  It served as a reminder to not forget my lunch from home again.  Both times, I had pizza with fries and a vegetable mix of carrots and beans.  Pizza and fries were greasy and over salted, vegetables were probably from the freezer and then overcooked.  Nasty food.  Don't know how people can live off of that crap.

2013-09-30 01:33:28 PM
In other word, the vast majority of schools STILL don't give a fark about the students.

I'd bet good money that the dropout schools are less concerned about onerous guidelines than they are UN Mind Control Vegetables.

what_now: funzyr: Why not just pack something for your kids? Who cares what they server if you give your own kids healthy food?

Because we as a society have decided that we want all kids- even those who parents are poor, ignorant of nutrition, or just simply bad parents- to have adequate food.

Was talking to a close friend of mine who teachesgrade school in England, in a suburb of London that, from the way she describes it could have provided shooting locations for The Wire,    A place with the same sort of poverty, and attendant social pathologies you'd expect in most American inner cities, and of course 80+% of her kids are on a free lunch program.   But she's just gotten back from a weekend retreat with ther kids where the teachers took them to one of those "outdoor aventure" places with ropes courses and zipwires and kayaking etc etc etc.  The idea being to expose the kids to the great outdoors, challenge them physically, give them self confidence etc etc

I though it was an amazing thing but I asked how the school could possibly have afforded it, assuming that like in the US some private charitable foundation or something must have picked up the bill.   Nope.  It seems that in the UK  there  are  "deprivation funds"  from the national government for schools, and the poorer the area where the school is, the more per student they get from the fund to try to equalize some of the advantages kids from wealthier families naturally have in being prepared for school/acess to resources/ access to extra-circiular activities, etc

What a concept:  having the quality of your education not being entirely dictated by the median real-estate prices in the are where you live, why it's egalitarian, almost..dare we say? democratic

serial_crusher: meh, the thing definitely has its flaws, but it looks a hellofa lot better than what my school's lunch program looked like.

Exactly. Every new government program is inefficient. Eventually we will work out the kinks and just have the farmers themselves throw the fruit and vegetables in the garbage. It will save all of the shipping costs and shiat for the schools that way.

/Nephew says they won't let you through the line until you take a piece of fruit
//So of course every kid takes a piece and throws it in the trash as soon as they are through the line
///Let them have as much as they want, but forcing them is stupid. Camel, water etc...

Bullshiat. Poors are like stray dogs...if you feed them, they'll start to expect it. We should just round 'em all up, have 'em spayed or neutered, and dump them in a shelter. If no one adopts them within a month...euthanasia.

/The homeless, that is...not stray dogs.
