EWreckedSean: Why is this scary? Western culture will have far more effects on easing troubles with Iran than sanctions or bombs ever will.

Been awhile.  Were you sanctioned by reason and sanity for constantly drinking the GOP Kool Aid?  Guess it worked.  Kudos!

EWreckedSean:

Ambitwistor: of course, a lot of that westernization came from the Shah who was considered a U.S. puppet ...

That's largely because the Shah was a brutal dictator reinstalled by the CIA in a coup against their democratically elected leader...

That was kind of my point.

It appears that Americans actually believe that IranAir is going to load up one of their Airbus 300s with Iranians and crash it on American soil.  Just like they crash them at London, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Paris and so on.  Because that's a strategy that works.

Wow.

Evil Twin Skippy: Shrugging Atlas: Someone alert the USS Vincennes!

An interesting proposition considering it's been scrapped.

I'm not allowed any poetic license to make an inappropriate and not terribly funny joke?

BigNumber12: Citation?

Comments in the article.

And you know damn well that some members of the right are using this as an argument against it.

BigNumber12: Mrfusticle: Lethal injection is much more Christian, I guess

If you can point me to someone who was lethally injected for blasphemy, you might have something resembling a point. Until then - nice attempt at some moderately impressive logical gymnastics.

Blasphemy is against the law in Iran .. You may not find the punishment appropriate but you Americans really can't comment on that, can you.

Love the false equivalencies in this thread.  "Sometimes bad things happen in the US, therefore we're just as bad as Iran."

It's amazing the logical contortions people will put themselves through so they can rationalize hating the nation which has given them everything.

What I really fear is Saudi Airlines.

Everything on the internet is true and serious.

So, you're still not pointing out instances of Americans' (or even a Christian government's) executing anyone for blasphemy. I guess your "all religions are equally evil" routine needs some work.

I am cautiously optimistic about a thaw in relations. It happened with the Soviet Union, it happened with China. Why not test the waters and see if it can happen with Iran? Historically they are a trading nation. There's money to be made there.

something something...when pigs fly...something something...not halal...

Finish the joke and feel free to take credit.  Too drunk for this.

mainstreet62: JesusJuice: sammyk: Yes subby easing of decades long tensions between Iran and the US is scary.

It is. Islamic extremism is something to be contained and strangled, not interacted with.

And you say that with a straight face while completely ignoring the fact that it happens here in the United States, too, from the Bible thumping idiots that oppose ACA, but are perfectly fine with a government sanctioned toll crossing in every woman's uterus.

1. I'm a firm atheist (not "agnostic," but "gods cannot exist"), very pro-choice (actually  pro-abortion), and I'm very opposed to the ACA (partially because if it sticks and Republicans come to power again, guess what medical procedures they'll go after first).

2. The most violent Christians in America are pussies next to moderately violent Muslims in places like Iran. When's the last time you heard of someone martyring himself for the Vatican? Or John Hagee Ministries? Christians worldwide are mostly pacified and secularized; this is not true of Muslims anywhere in the world at this time.

3. Iran is still a totalitarian theocratic dictatorship, while the United States is (supposed to be, at least) a secular nation of free people. Us making friends with them is like trying to be friends with the mafia goons down the street. No matter what linguistic and mental gymnastics you perform to make it appear the relationship is one of mutual respect, in reality the relationship is what they want it to be because of the knife at your throat.

4. If they want to "ease tensions," they can begin by abolishing the training, arming, and funding of terrorists, admitting Islam is nothing more than an oppressive political system masquerading as a religion, removing all legal authority the Islamic clergy has, and - as a gesture of good faith - dismantling their military. Then I'll feel better about diplomatic relations and the resulting open airports.
