Washington is WAY too high.

Phoenix is WAY too low.

New Jersey is too high.

There is no excuse for Calgary not to be at the bottom.

Other than that, actually a pretty solid preseason list.  By which I mean it will be completely proven wrong by about October 20.

Pre-season power rankings are meaningless.  What matters is that hockey is back tomorrow!  And what better way to start than with a little Stompin' Tom Connors

I don;t think Florida is going to be that bad this year. I'm definately not saying they are a shoe in for the playoffs, but if they stay healthy I think they will be competitive. Their new division is pretty tough though.

I dunno, I don't see Florida being a total train wreck this year, especially with Tim Thomas.

I mean, Calgary might win fewer than 20 games this year.  They are going to be atrocious.

Not sure about Detroit at 7, they barely got in the playoffs last year and only got older(!)
Vancouver (Torts is gonna get the Sedins toplay all 200 ft?), Philly and Washington that neither did a whole lot of not much over Toronto that got in the playoffs last year, and has actually gotten better in every position.....Bahahahaha
Pittsburgh over Boston?!? Yea Boston shed a few guys, but they picked up a few too.  The line with Bergeron between Iginla and Lucic looked pretty awesome the one pre season game I caught bits of...  Look for a major rebound year for Iggy.

Calgary just grabed Joey Colborn from the Leafs, IF someone there can get a fire going under his ass he will be a fine pick-up

TT might help keep the goal against down... But they don't have much to help with the goals for

Detroit dealt with some key injuries last season. They have everybody back, with the exception of Brunner, and added Weiss and Alfredsson. They'll be a much better team, most likely top 3 in the east.

That and age will be less of a factor for the Wings than in the past now that they wont have to deal with long road trips out west and jet lag 3 times a season.

Love my Capitals but 8th?  Could be right if you look at it this way:  good enough to make it out of the 1st round of the playoffs this time, but another gag-fest in the 2nd round.

With the new conferences I'm hoping to see some changes and making things a little more competitive.     I just can't see how things will go, injuries are always a factor, as well as those early game points.

Going to be a fun year for hockey, that's for sure.

Vokoun out doesn't worry me too much, although I do wish Brad Thiessen was in the wings in Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Zatkoff has been waiting for this, he'll do just fine. Letang on the other hand... his assists will be missed. I hope Neal and Gino are up to the task now that Staal isn't there.

I also don't understand the new playoff system.. I like the idea of the division playoffs, but hate the wildcard aspect.

You can have both wildcards from the same division, the division winners play the wildcards, and then the next round is the 'division championship'

But you could theoretically have a team playing in the other division's championship.

Weird shiat

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that means they have to score at least six goals per game to stay competitive.

Can't very well call it the Northeast division which Florida and Tampa in it. Hell, shouldn't even call it Atlantic with Detroit in it.

I agree with the other farker. Go back to Adams, Smythe, Norris, and Patrick divisions.

RumsfeldsReplacement: Phoenix is WAY too low.

Canadian media are still bitter. Though we have a tough start: vs NYR Thursday, then a 5 game road trip: Sharks, Islanders, Wings, Flyers and Canes. I'll be more than pleased to get out of that with 7 pts out of 12 possible.

---
Speaking of points, it's back and it's even crazier than last year: The Alternate Points standings.

SIX different ideas being tracked this year.

Standard: the normal NHL standings.
International: The system used in international hockey, including the Olympics. 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for an OT or shootout win, 1 pt for losing in OT or later.
Revised: My revised 3 point system, rewarding teams for winning while playing hockey. OT wins are worth 3 points and OT losses are worth nothing. Everything else is the same as the International system.
Old NHL: Fark the shootout and loser points. You win, you get 2 points. You lose, you get nothing. If it's tied after OT, it's a tie! All games that go to a shootout are called ties are worth 1 point.

The last two were taken from Down Goes Brown's Grantland "How You'd Fix" the NHL columns because I thought they were interesting. My revised system made it to the column and DGB told me in an email to tell you all "Hi" for him.

Soccer style: Same idea as the Old NHL system, but all wins are worth 3 points like in soccer.
Four-point system: Easily the most radical, yet sensible idea. It's still "fark the shootout" but there is a loser point. Regulation wins are worth 4 points, OT wins are worth 3 pts and OT losses are worth 1 point. Ties are worth 2 points per team.

The linked Google spreadsheet will be updated with results every night. If the spreadsheet is hard to read, let me know what you'd like me to fix and I'll try my best.

TSN is good for overall hockey coverage.  But their power rankings are the absolute worst.  ESPN's or Yahoo Sports' are better.

TSN's rankings are done by a fantasy sports guy and are based on a formula that relies heavily on individual stats.  As a result, it is overly sensitive to things like player injuries, and under-sensitive to little things like how well the team is actually playing together as a team, and whether or not they are actually winning games, and against what kind of opposition.

The only person I've ever met who liked Crosby was a Senators fan, but she was hot as hell, so she had that going for her.  CSB time:  I had a couple Canadians living on my hall during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.  They were all over the moon about winning the hockey gold medal, but they all quickly followed that sentiment up with "did it have to be Crosby that scored the OT goal?" (except for the aforementioned Sens fan)

This is probably the best team the Caps have put out in a while. We have depth at forward. I like both goalies. Green is healthy. Rookies Wilson and Carrick had phenomenal pre-seasons. I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

Drop the Sens to 7, Pens to 6, Wing to 4, B's to 2.

I would even contemplate flipping the Wings and Kings around too. Detroit gave Chicago the hardest time in the playoffs last year, and I think they'll be even better with Alfredsson.

TSN has a fantasy hockey statgeek do their power rankings.  Ottawa being that high is based solely in his projection of Bobby Ryan netting 35-40, Spezza finishing top ten and Karlsson getting 60+ points.  That they may very well be the only players on the team that actually find the net consistantly this year is irrelevant in his little formula.

I don't think they're a playoff team, not based on their current roster.*

This is year three of the Sabres' rebuild.  They've traded most of their old core (except for Vanek and Miller) and have put together two extremely solid drafts in a row (four 1st round picks in the last two years).

One more rebuilding year to get all their talented rookies and young players more NHL experience, and one more high 1st round pick.  I'm expecting the Sabres to return to the playoffs and contention in 2014-15.

I'm really liking the looks of the team they are building.  Grigorenko, Armia, Ristolainen, Larsson, Zadorov, McCabe, Girgensens, Hackett, Makarov.  That's a really solid pipeline of young talent due to be NHL ready over the next couple years.

*(The one possible exception for this season is if Ryan Miller gets it in his head that he wants to be the Olympic starter in Sochi and gets back in his form from 2010, in which case he might carry the team to the playoffs anyway.)

Don't look at me to stop you from ragging on them. I'm more worried about getting to the playoffs just because I don't know how things will play out with the new setup. Calgary is the only team that isn't anywhere near playoff-caliber. But everyone else? I think you can make a fair argument for all of them, even the Oilers. If I had to guess, the playoff wild card rule gets used and we have 5 playoff teams out of the Pacific and 3 from the Central (Chicago, St. Louis and Nashville).

I guess some of the blame goes to management, that they didn't especially have a good slot for him... But there didn't seem to be any accommodation for his style and skill set bouncing around the lines, not getting to build any chemistry.
I just looked up his playoff stats and he wasn't exactly the ghost I thought he was either... 12 pts. in 15 games.

Problem is no touch icing(IMHO) slows the game down too much.  Once the puck goes past center everyone just stops skating, so the hybrid idea allows a good puck race to happen while preventing rat moves or accidental slips.

I went to a Kings game while I was on vacation last season, and almost every whistle that wasn't a goal/penalty the guy behind me went "I think that was icing." And he wasn't someone who was just given the seats, he was talking before the game about how much he had paid, and they weren't cheap seats. I don't know if the lockout hurt them, but I was actually surprised by how easy it was to get tickets. They were the defending champs and I was able to buy 4th row centre ice tickets no problem through the box office, and he paid a fair bit less than face value.

So hybrid icing is "call it at the faceoff dots" roughly?  If the offensive player is winning that race, is it live no matter what, or can the defender still sneak in there and force icing?

Basically it is a judgement call on the part of the linesmen whether the offensive player has a reasonable chance of winning the race.  It isn't a straight up which guy is closer thing either, things like the angle of the puck and where its likely to go off the boards are a part of the call.  If the linesman allows play to continue, the defenseman can still win the race and touch up for icing.

The moment your sport gets an offside rule more complicated than rugby's, it's too late to worry about confusing the newbies. In this case, I'd just wind up telling people "yeah, if you're defending you can't just dump the puck uprink unless the linesman thinks you've got a reasonable chance of catching up with it before the opposition do." Explain the fine details of how the linesman has to make that call only if they come up on a specific play.

You say that like I'm likely to change my mind after a game or two...
Si nous avons tous aimé la même équipe, il ne serait pas autant de plaisir
[If we all liked the same team, it wouldn't be as much fun]

For you Hockey Night in Canada fans, according to the guy who does their opening montages (here's his Twitter) tonight's season opening montage is going feature the premiere of a new song from the Sam Roberts Band.

And in case anyone wanted to know who the guy is that puts the montages together and how he does it, here's a profile on him that was run in the National Post during the playoffs.

My pleasure.  I submitted the article to the Sports tab, so hopefully we'll get a thread on it

Steve Ott has been named co-captain of the Sabres along with Vanek.

The world is surely near its end.

Do any of you Total Farkers know if a thread has been greened for tonight's games?

Kessel resigns for 8 years, 64 million.  I know it sound a bit much but keep in mind since 2009 only 8 players in the NHL have scored more goals.  Now if Phaneuf would be so kind as to take 5 million or less.

And I hear he's not even competing in Sochi because he didn't register for something by the deadline.

It's not surprising if you've watched the Sabres at all the last couple of years.

Ott is one of the few experienced veterans left on the team, and besides which one of the few who played with consistent effort and intensity from beginning to end of last year's garbage season.  I know he has had a reputation as a pest/borderline-dirty player in the past, but that hasn't really been how he's played since he came to Buffalo, and AFAIC the effort and consistency of his game as a Sabre is exactly the type of player I'd want the younger players to emulate.  So good choice for captain.
