ds_4815: Pittsburgh Penguins: #2

I just scrolled down to see where the Bruins were at, then I stopped reading.

Below the Penguins?

OK...

dustygrimp: Jackpot777: dustygrimp: O/U on the number of times Sidney Crosby whines to the refs instead of manning up and playing harder: 246. O/U on the number of times anyone on ESPN calls him on it: 1/2.

/ Taking the over and the under.

Second in assists in the league, third in points. No amount of "whining" threads the needle in passing or puts a puck in the net. May I beseech you, good sir, to cry more.

I wouldn't feel comfortable crying any more than that. I could never match the amount of crying Pens fans did when my beloved Bruins swept them last spring.

Touché.

I was at a hockey tourney in Banff this weekend and the Jets were in town for a skate. Some big, fast boys out there. Would not mind seeing them make the post-season, but I have my doubts.

Dafatone: Misuse? That might explain it. I remember thinking "oh my god, Iginla's the worst hockey player I've ever seen." I called him the Bruins' MVP for the ECF.

How could they have used him differently? He appeared terrible at all facets of the game. Yes, I know he put up a lot of points for the Pens in the regular season.

I guess some of the blame goes to management, that they didn't especially have a good slot for him... But there didn't seem to be any accommodation for his style and skill set bouncing around the lines, not getting to build any chemistry.
I just looked up his playoff stats and he wasn't exactly the ghost I thought he was either... 12 pts. in 15 games.

I thought it seemed to work pretty well in the pre-season, although I'm not sure I'd qualify as a casual fan.  But 2 cents wise, I'm not sure the casual fan would have been paying enough attention to notice the difference.

Tomorrow. It was tested in the preseason. I was at the Coyotes intra-team charity scrimmage a couple of weeks ago and I had to explain to my family who were with me for that the new rule and it confused them (they don't follow hockey as much as I do).

I think I watched a combined total of 10 preseason minutes. All this getting caught up on Breaking Bad non-sense got in the way to realize they were even testing it.

from the pre season games I saw, it basically was...  Nearly every time it was clearly going for icing the icing team skater baled to save some for the face-off.

Problem is no touch icing(IMHO) slows the game down too much.  Once the puck goes past center everyone just stops skating, so the hybrid idea allows a good puck race to happen while preventing rat moves or accidental slips.

I went to a Kings game while I was on vacation last season, and almost every whistle that wasn't a goal/penalty the guy behind me went "I think that was icing." And he wasn't someone who was just given the seats, he was talking before the game about how much he had paid, and they weren't cheap seats. I don't know if the lockout hurt them, but I was actually surprised by how easy it was to get tickets. They were the defending champs and I was able to buy 4th row centre ice tickets no problem through the box office, and he paid a fair bit less than face value.

Casual fans don't understand icing as it is.  This protects players (See Joni Pitkanen's exploded heel bone from last year).

How many times has anyone left a game saying "wow remember that play where he beat out the icing! that sure was exciting!"

RumsfeldsReplacement: Washington is WAY too high.

Phoenix is WAY too low.

New Jersey is too high.

There is no excuse for Calgary not to be at the bottom.

Other than that, actually a pretty solid preseason list.  By which I mean it will be completely proven wrong by about October 20.

I am a huge Flames fan. And I do believe they should be at the bottom.

So hybrid icing is "call it at the faceoff dots" roughly?  If the offensive player is winning that race, is it live no matter what, or can the defender still sneak in there and force icing?

from the small sample I saw there were none close enough to get ugly, but it seemed like about stride and a half to the defender, *tweet*, stride and a half to the offense let it go...

Basically it is a judgement call on the part of the linesmen whether the offensive player has a reasonable chance of winning the race.  It isn't a straight up which guy is closer thing either, things like the angle of the puck and where its likely to go off the boards are a part of the call.  If the linesman allows play to continue, the defenseman can still win the race and touch up for icing.

Polish Hussar: Hospitaller: Fubegra: I'd swap the Wings and the Penguins. The Wings are pretty much intact from last year, and they were the only ones to force a Game 7 against the Hawks.

Actually the Hawks forced a Game 7 on the Red Wings.  Wings couldn't close the deal in 567 games after going up 3-1.

And my Chicago relatives haven't let me hear the end of it.  What can I say?  The Wings got outplayed the last few games.

But jesus, the Wings played their ass off.  That was an epic series..

The moment your sport gets an offside rule more complicated than rugby's, it's too late to worry about confusing the newbies. In this case, I'd just wind up telling people "yeah, if you're defending you can't just dump the puck uprink unless the linesman thinks you've got a reasonable chance of catching up with it before the opposition do." Explain the fine details of how the linesman has to make that call only if they come up on a specific play.

Kessel resigns for 8 years, 64 million.  I know it sound a bit much but keep in mind since 2009 only 8 players in the NHL have scored more goals.  Now if Phaneuf would be so kind as to take 5 million or less.

It's not surprising if you've watched the Sabres at all the last couple of years.

Ott is one of the few experienced veterans left on the team, and besides which one of the few who played with consistent effort and intensity from beginning to end of last year's garbage season.  I know he has had a reputation as a pest/borderline-dirty player in the past, but that hasn't really been how he's played since he came to Buffalo, and AFAIC the effort and consistency of his game as a Sabre is exactly the type of player I'd want the younger players to emulate.  So good choice for captain.
