TSN is good for overall hockey coverage.  But their power rankings are the absolute worst.  ESPN's or Yahoo Sports' are better.

TSN's rankings are done by a fantasy sports guy and are based on a formula that relies heavily on individual stats.  As a result, it is overly sensitive to things like player injuries, and under-sensitive to little things like how well the team is actually playing together as a team, and whether or not they are actually winning games, and against what kind of opposition.

Ok how about this: Malkin is a dirty POS.

soopey: LemSkroob: MugzyBrown: I just realized the Flyers are in the "metropolitan" division.

Who are the ad-wizards who came up with that one?

The annoying part isn't that they changed the division name... but they took that name and gave it to another division, with teams that have nothing to do with the division name.

Can't very well call it the Northeast division which Florida and Tampa in it. Hell, shouldn't even call it Atlantic with Detroit in it.

I agree with the other farker. Go back to Adams, Smythe, Norris, and Patrick divisions.

Or come up with new ones. I nominate Gretzky, Orr, Cherry, and Plante.

I would nominate Howe and Yzerman

I'd swap the Wings and the Penguins. The Wings are pretty much intact from last year, and they were the only ones to force a Game 7 against the Hawks.

If you want to mock the Penguins, why not point out that Fleury hasn't had a good year in like four years and sounds like a chipmunk on helium?

I humbly suggest Bettman 1-4, with each divisional champ in a 4-net battle royale to see who can be hated the most.

Nahh. Three teams would be fun. Like three sided soccer.

Dafatone: Nobody likes Crosby

The only person I've ever met who liked Crosby was a Senators fan, but she was hot as hell, so she had that going for her.  CSB time:  I had a couple Canadians living on my hall during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.  They were all over the moon about winning the hockey gold medal, but they all quickly followed that sentiment up with "did it have to be Crosby that scored the OT goal?" (except for the aforementioned Sens fan)

I like the new divisions, though the names could use different names. The Central could be set up favorably for the Hawks, though the Blues and Stars should put up a good fight. I'm curious to see how Seth Jones does in Nashville; that defense could be nasty in a couple of years.

This is probably the best team the Caps have put out in a while. We have depth at forward. I like both goalies. Green is healthy. Rookies Wilson and Carrick had phenomenal pre-seasons. I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

Drop the Sens to 7, Pens to 6, Wing to 4, B's to 2.

I would even contemplate flipping the Wings and Kings around too. Detroit gave Chicago the hardest time in the playoffs last year, and I think they'll be even better with Alfredsson.

I'm expecting ESPN might do their rankings later today or tomorrow morning (last year, they did their beginning-of-season rankings a couple of days before the season started).

One thing for sure: I'll have to make sure not to miss TSN's ranking page each week, since they don't bother archiving their rankings.

TJWitz: Sens at 6 has to be some sort of joke, right?

TSN has a fantasy hockey statgeek do their power rankings.  Ottawa being that high is based solely in his projection of Bobby Ryan netting 35-40, Spezza finishing top ten and Karlsson getting 60+ points.  That they may very well be the only players on the team that actually find the net consistantly this year is irrelevant in his little formula.

Sadly it's a pretty busy division, the math really does suck for the Sabers.  (fifth place takes out a playoff team from last year) Good news is Tampa and Florida will keep you guys out of the basement!

I don't think they're a playoff team, not based on their current roster.*

This is year three of the Sabres' rebuild.  They've traded most of their old core (except for Vanek and Miller) and have put together two extremely solid drafts in a row (four 1st round picks in the last two years).

One more rebuilding year to get all their talented rookies and young players more NHL experience, and one more high 1st round pick.  I'm expecting the Sabres to return to the playoffs and contention in 2014-15.

I'm really liking the looks of the team they are building.  Grigorenko, Armia, Ristolainen, Larsson, Zadorov, McCabe, Girgensens, Hackett, Makarov.  That's a really solid pipeline of young talent due to be NHL ready over the next couple years.

*(The one possible exception for this season is if Ryan Miller gets it in his head that he wants to be the Olympic starter in Sochi and gets back in his form from 2010, in which case he might carry the team to the playoffs anyway.)

Misuse?  That might explain it.  I remember thinking "oh my god, Iginla's the worst hockey player I've ever seen."  I called him the Bruins' MVP for the ECF.

How could they have used him differently?  He appeared terrible at all facets of the game.  Yes, I know he put up a lot of points for the Pens in the regular season.

Don't look at me to stop you from ragging on them. I'm more worried about getting to the playoffs just because I don't know how things will play out with the new setup. Calgary is the only team that isn't anywhere near playoff-caliber. But everyone else? I think you can make a fair argument for all of them, even the Oilers. If I had to guess, the playoff wild card rule gets used and we have 5 playoff teams out of the Pacific and 3 from the Central (Chicago, St. Louis and Nashville).
