Oh, they'll win the President's Trophy for sure. It's the only hardware they'll win, too.

It's going to be a long cold winter in Calgary...

2013-09-30 01:35:48 PM
Washington is WAY too high.

Phoenix is WAY too low.

New Jersey is too high.

There is no excuse for Calgary not to be at the bottom.

Other than that, actually a pretty solid preseason list.  By which I mean it will be completely proven wrong by about October 20.

Pre-season power rankings are meaningless.  What matters is that hockey is back tomorrow!  And what better way to start than with a little Stompin' Tom Connors

I've been doing a bit a Googling, TSN is the only major organization I saw that did pre-season NHL power rankings

2013-09-30 01:50:25 PM
4 teams in the top 10 are in the Atkantic division.. so that's clearly going to be the toughest one.

2013-09-30 01:50:52 PM
I don;t think Florida is going to be that bad this year. I'm definately not saying they are a shoe in for the playoffs, but if they stay healthy I think they will be competitive. Their new division is pretty tough though.

I dunno, I don't see Florida being a total train wreck this year, especially with Tim Thomas.

I mean, Calgary might win fewer than 20 games this year.  They are going to be atrocious.

Edmonton is gonna shock the world.

2013-09-30 01:55:45 PM
Literally a top 20 team, yes!  lol

2013-09-30 01:55:45 PM
Not sure about Detroit at 7, they barely got in the playoffs last year and only got older(!)
Vancouver (Torts is gonna get the Sedins toplay all 200 ft?), Philly and Washington that neither did a whole lot of not much over Toronto that got in the playoffs last year, and has actually gotten better in every position.....Bahahahaha
Pittsburgh over Boston?!? Yea Boston shed a few guys, but they picked up a few too.  The line with Bergeron between Iginla and Lucic looked pretty awesome the one pre season game I caught bits of...  Look for a major rebound year for Iggy.

I hope so.  I'd like Dallas to do well, but damn those guys are behind the eight ball already with injuries.

Calgary just grabed Joey Colborn from the Leafs, IF someone there can get a fire going under his ass he will be a fine pick-up

TT might help keep the goal against down... But they don't have much to help with the goals for

Detroit dealt with some key injuries last season. They have everybody back, with the exception of Brunner, and added Weiss and Alfredsson. They'll be a much better team, most likely top 3 in the east.

That and age will be less of a factor for the Wings than in the past now that they wont have to deal with long road trips out west and jet lag 3 times a season.

Love my Capitals but 8th?  Could be right if you look at it this way:  good enough to make it out of the 1st round of the playoffs this time, but another gag-fest in the 2nd round.

2013-09-30 02:04:29 PM
With the new conferences I'm hoping to see some changes and making things a little more competitive.     I just can't see how things will go, injuries are always a factor, as well as those early game points.

Going to be a fun year for hockey, that's for sure.

I just realized the Flyers are in the "metropolitan" division.

Who are the ad-wizards who came up with that one?

The annoying part isn't that they changed the division name... but they took that name and gave it to another division, with teams that have nothing to do with the division name.

I'm not buying into the Flyers at all this year.  They may make the playoffs, but if they do that's about it.

They should have just have gone back to Patrick, Smythe, etc.. then it doesn't matter where you put each team.

O/U on the number of times Sidney Crosby whines to the refs instead of manning up and playing harder: 246. O/U on the number of times anyone on ESPN calls him on it: 1/2.

/ Taking the over and the under.

2013-09-30 02:19:26 PM
Vokoun out doesn't worry me too much, although I do wish Brad Thiessen was in the wings in Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Zatkoff has been waiting for this, he'll do just fine. Letang on the other hand... his assists will be missed. I hope Neal and Gino are up to the task now that Staal isn't there.

2013-09-30 02:19:49 PM
Nats missed the playoffs. The Skins suck. The Wizards are irrelevant because the Heat will win the East anyway.

LETS GO CAPS

2013-09-30 02:19:56 PM
I also don't understand the new playoff system.. I like the idea of the division playoffs, but hate the wildcard aspect.

You can have both wildcards from the same division, the division winners play the wildcards, and then the next round is the 'division championship'

But you could theoretically have a team playing in the other division's championship.

Weird shiat

Damnit, Pronger!

And because I feel like it, another HNiC opening montage from last season's playoffs.  Bruins/Penguins Game 4 - "Battle Born" by The Killers

As a Detroit fan, I know that feel.  Although we got lucky this year.  The Tigers made the playoffs and the Lions have managed to postpone sucking until after the start of hockey season.

#2 Penguins...Key Injuries: Letang (leg)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that means they have to score at least six goals per game to stay competitive.

Capgeek shows: Martin, Orpik, Scuderi, Niskanen, Despres, Bortuzzo, and Engelland as their starting top seven.

Can't very well call it the Northeast division which Florida and Tampa in it. Hell, shouldn't even call it Atlantic with Detroit in it.

I agree with the other farker. Go back to Adams, Smythe, Norris, and Patrick divisions.

Or come up with new ones. I nominate Gretzky, Orr, Cherry, and Plante.

Second in assists in the league, third in points. No amount of "whining" threads the needle in passing or puts a puck in the net. May I beseech you, good sir, to cry more.

DanZero: Whar graph whar?

Not much to graph at this point.

Don't worry... as long as we actually get a weekly hockey power rankings thread, I'll have graphs handy (for both TSN and ESPN this time around).

RumsfeldsReplacement: Phoenix is WAY too low.

Canadian media are still bitter. Though we have a tough start: vs NYR Thursday, then a 5 game road trip: Sharks, Islanders, Wings, Flyers and Canes. I'll be more than pleased to get out of that with 7 pts out of 12 possible.

---
Speaking of points, it's back and it's even crazier than last year: The Alternate Points standings.

SIX different ideas being tracked this year.

Standard: the normal NHL standings.
International: The system used in international hockey, including the Olympics. 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for an OT or shootout win, 1 pt for losing in OT or later.
Revised: My revised 3 point system, rewarding teams for winning while playing hockey. OT wins are worth 3 points and OT losses are worth nothing. Everything else is the same as the International system.
Old NHL: Fark the shootout and loser points. You win, you get 2 points. You lose, you get nothing. If it's tied after OT, it's a tie! All games that go to a shootout are called ties are worth 1 point.

The last two were taken from Down Goes Brown's Grantland "How You'd Fix" the NHL columns because I thought they were interesting. My revised system made it to the column and DGB told me in an email to tell you all "Hi" for him.

Soccer style: Same idea as the Old NHL system, but all wins are worth 3 points like in soccer.
Four-point system: Easily the most radical, yet sensible idea. It's still "fark the shootout" but there is a loser point. Regulation wins are worth 4 points, OT wins are worth 3 pts and OT losses are worth 1 point. Ties are worth 2 points per team.

The linked Google spreadsheet will be updated with results every night. If the spreadsheet is hard to read, let me know what you'd like me to fix and I'll try my best.

The Penguins are too damn high.

I say this as a Pens fan.

On the other hand, can we go just a few days without blind Pens bashing?  I get it.  Nobody likes Crosby.  But there are other things in hockey, yet hockey threads just become all "CINDY CRYSBY HA HA HA" all the time.  It's boring.

If you want to mock the Penguins, why not point out that Fleury hasn't had a good year in like four years and sounds like a chipmunk on helium?

soopey: I agree with the other farker. Go back to Adams, Smythe, Norris, and Patrick divisions.

I humbly suggest Bettman 1-4, with each divisional champ in a 4-net battle royale to see who can be hated the most.
