Shkquanda, ra`Jall, ji1Haddi, Chakwuondda, ma'Brilliant, Hotcawfee, Chunderinqua, Moaneesha, Eujetoosha, Smaquanda, Propecia, Mangonilla, and Fronisha are all legitimate Africam names, in Africam.
Trust me, I speak Africam.

Congratulations, Mr. Tech-Savvy HR Guy, you've just made it so that everyone who's ever applied to work at your company but wasn't hired can buy a bigger house and a better car than they could have if they had been hired by your company.

2013-09-30 10:09:53 AM
I read this as a poor attempt at sarcasm.  Like it should have "(rolls eyes)" at the end of it.  Because you'd have to be the world's stupidest hiring manager to admit to that, double so to admit it in public.  And even if it is sarcasm, you're still pretty high on the stupid list to post it in public.

Me thinks the hiring manager is gonna need to be hired soon....by a new company.

I knew these guys who had friends at this other school who had a class with this girl whose twin brothers were named Lamonjello and Oranjello. Ha, get it? Lemon Jellow and Orange Jello. That's crazy, I can't believe someone did that.

Well, this is just one of thousands of idiotic H.R. people.  They throw people in the round file because of a lot less racist and more trivial reasons.

Then they whine that they need more H1-Bs because there is no talent in the country.  Sure there is no talent that fits into your stupid ass rulebook.

No, no, no... this is the state of the H.R. profession at the moment.  They pat themselves on the back for stuff like this.

(this was on NYT FB article posting about a (Black) mother Google searching her unborn child's name to see what connotations and future it could hold for him)

A future in which openly racist hiring managers like this are fired after doing something this dumb, one should hope.

Yes. This is important.

If they're only discriminating against black people who don't have connections to their African heritage because their ancestors were enslaved then it's not racist. Or something.

This guy just offered a heaping pile of smoking gun evidence for Civil Rights Act racial discrimination.  He could potentially be costing the company millions upon millions of dollars in lawsuits, because pretty much every Black person who has ever applied at this company can now sue them.

He should be fired.  Immediately.

Funny, no one ever accused me of having a "Greek power" first name ("Christopher").

Lord_Baull: I am glad to see that things like affirmative action are no longer necessary in America and racism has undoubtedly come to an end.

While I agree that it is foolish to discriminate based on something like how someone's name sounds, I can't help but also wonder what the fark is wrong with people that they name their children some of these ridiculous sounding names that everyone knows will cause them to have less opportunities in the future. Even though people shouldn't discriminate, it's well established that really unusual names put people at a significant disadvantage.

2013-09-30 10:52:23 AM
I personally am not turned off by black sounding names, I just find them kinda stupid.  And stupid not on the person who has the name, but stupid on the parents.  I live and work in DC, a majority minority - black town.  I've worked with a lot of smart folks and among them are Alex, Earl and Greg.  Guess which one is black?  Trick question, all three are.  On the other hand, My son has a playmate named Kuduce - BECAUSE HIS PARENTS ARE FROM AFRICA.  The made up names are just silly and reaching.  It's like someone constantly saying irregardless because it is supposed to make him sound smart and does the exact opposite to people who actually ARE smart.  It's just painful.

But no, since I'm not dealing with the parent who gave the person the stupid name, and am instead working with the person with the stupid name, I don't have this biggot's problem.  Then again, if I was LaShandra, I'd put Shaun or something on my resume.  Let's not be stupid.
