in my edgy fan fiction, Giligans "incompitence" was a calculated, methodical, deliberate process because he didn't want to be rescued.

Dwight proved his worth in the return.  Except for the weapon incidents (which I'll concede are a valid cause for firing him), he's a perfectly capable worker.
