d23: farker99: The only problem is that the folks he represents think he is sane.

Issa, Bachman, Gohmert, King... this is the fruit of the idiots being about to put in their own districts and gerrymander.

It's time for computers to create districts.  Creating algorithms to do it is trivial.  We have to let the sane start speaking over the insane again.

That is how most countries do it, even before computers. Algorithmically. And you do have to give it a pass over with a human eye regardless so that you don't have some asinine situation like dudes x, y, and z having their rep being 50 miles away instead of the guy next door because the actual population distribution did not fall neatly.
But whurbleburble state's rights garbl.

The absolute GALL they have to try to blame this on the Democrats and the President is astounding, not to mention the manner in which they're going about this.

One optimistic Republican, echoing many others, said that a delay ought to be agreeable since the GOP had started out with a much more extreme position. "You're going from saying, 'Do away with Obamacare for good, total, ever, ever and ever,' to saying, 'Just delay it, suspend it, just for 12 months.' That's a big concession," said Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.).

Diogenes: xxcorydxx: Aristocles: House Republicans Really Believe Democrats Will Cave On Obamacare To Avoid A Government Shutdown

This is a moot point as the teabagger want a govt shut down and they want Obamacare to be defunded/repealed/improved.

It's really a win-win for teabagger.

Checkmate, BOB.

so, I was on vacation for a week and a half and didn't get on here at all, I see you're still trying that BOB thing, has it caught on yet?

for what it's worth, I really don't believe that any of the people selling the GOP message actually believe it, since it's gotten so far out there. The smart ones (the ones that are making the money) are just putting on an act to get rich.

starsrift: Algorithmically

Algorithms can be biased. And there is always the problem of GIGO. Also, it's worth noting that gerrymandering can empower the politically disenfranchised as well- if you carve up naively based on population, you may slice a minority demographic into multiple voting districts. In an ideal world, this wouldn't be a problem, but we don't live in that world. By giving minorities the opportunity to vote as a block and have a representative who reflects their interests, we make the political process more fair.

The problem, of course, is that it can be abused.

The solution to abuse isn't to try and invent some "impartial" system. First, because it won't be impartial, and second, because even an "impartial" system will likely fail to be  fair. The solution is to identify and correct abuse when it happens, and to make abuse more difficult by having more checks and balances to control the process.

AngryDragon: I hate to say this but you know what I and a large part of the rest of the country is expecting? I expect the Dems to cave at the last minute and delay the ACA by a year. Just like they caved on the filibuster rule. Despite the fact that the ACA is desired by 3/4 of the country, has been upheld as the law of the land, and most importantly will SAVE LIVES, I fear the Dems will capitulate.

As much as we all expect them to flop, I think the Democrats have finally realized this and will stand against the tea derpers. When facing a government shutdown, as was in 95, the Democrats will hold strong

National Funk Congress Deadlocked On Get Up/Get Down Issue

CHOCOLATE CITY-After months of ceaseless debate, including last week's record 76-hour filibuster slap-bass solo from Senate Rubber Band Minority Leader Bootsy Collins (D-OH), the National Funk Congress is no closer to resolving its deadlock over the controversial "get up/get down" issue, insiders reported Monday.  "Get up-uh, get on up! Get up-uh, get on up!" shouted Getuplican Party supporters on the steps of the Capitol as the debate, as well as a massive 14-piece instrumental jam, raged within. The pro-up-getting demonstrators' chants were nearly drowned out by those of a nearby group of jungle-boogie Downocrats, who called upon all citizens to "Get down, get down!"The bitter "get up/get down" battle, which has polarized the nation's funk community, is part of a long-running battle between the two factions, rooted in more than 35 years of conflict over the direction in which the American people should shake it.

Cyclometh: They really think the Senate's gonna blink? What in the actual fark.

This is now bigger than partisanship. It doesn't matter what party's in power. The Senate does not look kindly on being told by the House what to do. It has its own institutional memory and sees itself as above the rabblerousing of the House. It may be good or bad but that's the truth. Now the House is pissing off the Senate qua Senate.

How? The voters routinely fail to hold Republicans accountable for their actions in office. The shutdown and impeachment in the 90s had absolutely no short-term effect on the balance of power, and by 2002 the GOP was in full control of both elected branches of government. I have serious doubts that the GOP's actions this time around will come at a significant electoral price.

It's no more complicated than that.

If they get the year delay, they'll just ask for another year delay when next year's budget negotiations start.

Of course they will - if we give in, they'll just hold the budget and debt ceiling hostage again and again. You know, like a couple of years ago, when Boehner got "98%" of what he wanted, and blamed the whole thing on the Democrats. Compromise, indeed.

I seriously don't understand why people don't get the analogy here: the GOP is North Korea in this negotiation. They're threatening to nuke us and claim it's all our fault, that we're forcing them to.

You certainly can gerrymander your way into the White House, by simply allotting electoral votes by Congressional district.

The Senate's a tougher nut to crack, but in theory you could gerrymander the state legislative districts to approve the amendment necessary to change direct election...

You can't gerrymander your way into the WH, nor into controlling the Senate.

Right now the GOP are proving they don't need control there to f*ck up our government.

And that sort of obstinate obstructionism has consequences.  The 'Do-Nothing' Republican Congress of the 1940s was soon followed by 40 years of the Congress being controlled by the Democrats.

Those that ignore history....

I don't know if the 40s are really analogous. In the late 40s, the Democrats had just successfully led the country through the Great Depression and World War II (not to mention that Republican economic mismanagement and Hoovervilles were a living memory to pretty much the entire voting population) and so the Democrats had a large surplus of political goodwill to tap. Modern Democrats have no similar track record of success.
