They're belatedly trying to control the message and spin this in their favor.

The absolute GALL they have to try to blame this on the Democrats and the President is astounding, not to mention the manner in which they're going about this.

One optimistic Republican, echoing many others, said that a delay ought to be agreeable since the GOP had started out with a much more extreme position. "You're going from saying, 'Do away with Obamacare for good, total, ever, ever and ever,' to saying, 'Just delay it, suspend it, just for 12 months.' That's a big concession," said Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.).

If you were to call these people turds, you'd get an angry letter from the ATDL (Anti Turd-Defamation League) demanding you cease and desist from this pernicious slander of good turds everywhere. And they'd be right.

Completely sane. So just think about the people in Eastern San Diego County for a minute in that light and then you understand why they think having BlackWater open a training camp is good for the area.

I have this recurring dream where the DOJ finds some sort of technicality that allows the President to mandate nationwide computerized redistricting via Executive Order.  I always wake up with a large smile and sheets that need to be changed.

I don't really like the "teenager" analogy, basically because the majority of teenagers I've known in my life have MUCH better reasoning ability than people in the tea party.

The bigger problem is that our national debate these days is pretty much between simpletons.  Every debate is a false dilemma.  Look at the tendency to put people into "socialist" and "capitalist" camps.  The U.S. has no real socialists right now.   We don't have a pure capitalist economy either.  Why?  Because those extremes give poor results.  If we had single payer healthcare we wouldn't suddenly be a socialist country, we'd still be a capitalist country with certain social programs.

But we can't argue in shades of grey anymore.  We have a party that can't compromise on anything because they are involved in childish purity testing and another party that can't stand up and call them on the shenanigans for fear of alienating their own corporate masters.  This is as farked up as politics in the country has ever gotten as far as my knowledge of history goes.

(Except maybe for the 1910s and 1920s, and the fact that the politics has a lot of resemblances to that period of history is downright horrifying.)

How? The voters routinely fail to hold Republicans accountable for their actions in office. The shutdown and impeachment in the 90s had absolutely no short-term effect on the balance of power, and by 2002 the GOP was in full control of both elected branches of government. I have serious doubts that the GOP's actions this time around will come at a significant electoral price.

Stop compromising with them.  Period.  I know it sounds ridiculous but that's what needs to be done.  The government is completely dysfunctional anyway.  A few months of just cutting them out of the mix can't do any more damage.  Whoever is rational left in the Republican party will get the message quickly and begin housecleaning.

I hate to say this but you know what I and a large part of the rest of the country is expecting?  I expect the Dems to cave at the last minute and delay the ACA by a year.  Just like they caved on the filibuster rule.  Despite the fact that the ACA is desired by 3/4 of the country, has been upheld as the law of the land, and most importantly will SAVE LIVES, I fear the Dems will capitulate.

The Democrats talk a good game.  You know what the difference is tactically between the Ds and Rs?  The Rs will do what they threaten to do.  This has always been the Ds problem and everyone knows it.  The Rs have turned manipulating that flaw into an art form.
