Neat, but why was this necessary?

Just quit like a normal person - in person, face-to-face. This is the equivalent of a text message break-up, and only serves to make this gal harder to hire.

Honestly, who would hire you when you quit jobs in THIS kind of fashion?

Because she works in an industry that values creativity, and more importantly, views, and she just showed she has one and can generate the other.  She'll have no trouble getting work.

Her bosses should be arrested for holding a gun to her head for those 2 years, making her work at such an unfulfilling job, shouldn't they?

Clearly they've committed a crime.

Also, how 'epic' of you to dance in the hallway of an empty building after everyone has gone home!
Stand back, everyone.  Rule breaker coming through!

Duh, if you read the "about" at youtube she is advertising for a new job.

I work for an awesome company that makes news videos. I have put my entire life into this job, but my boss only cares about quantity, how fast we write and how many views each video gets.
I believe it's more important to focus on the quality of the content. When you learn to improve this, the views will come. Here is a little video I made explaining my feelings.

Wanna deal with me? Hit me up: www.marinavshifrin.com

If her other videos are anything like this, I can see why she had trouble getting views. Text used in video has no shadows or outlining to make it properly readable against the varied contrast behind the text, narrative is poor and sloppy, and there seems to be no relation between the action in the video and the text.

Also, if she spends all her time dancing around at work instead of doing her job, I can understand why she must work late so much.

The music also sucked. Sounded like a retard with a sampling machine who thinks he's some rock star.

Her boss should be grateful she quit. Probably saved him the trouble of pressing "send" on her pink slip memo he was getting ready to send out.

Yep, it seems to me that if your job is to produce revenue by generating views then the two measurable indicators of utility are quantity of videos and views per video.

I suspect that the people commenting in support of this woman don't have much experience supervising/managing others. If they did, they'd already know that someone who so openly criticizes her bosses will continue to do the same to her next boss, and her next boss, and so on. A reasonable manager will never publicly criticize an underperforming worker, and a good worker should extend the same courtesy.

If you have significant supervisory experience and you still support this woman, seek help because there's something wrong with you. And if you honestly think this video won't hurt her on her job searches in the future, you're an idiot.

2013-09-30 04:37:58 PM
What's odd is that the content of the video has nothing to do with her decision to quit unless she thinks it will generate tons of views which, in this case, would be worthless at best. My guess is that she thinks she's "funny"; the content of the video is not funny at all. I also suspect she's got rich parents.

2013-09-30 04:52:58 PM
If she went into the building after hours and there wasn't anyone else there. What would stop her boss from claiming she stole company property.

She dances like a three year old starved for attention at a family funeral.

All it lacked was her yelling "na na boo boo!!"

Wrong, Subby, her ass was not "off" butt was still intact and "on" as she walked out.
Plus the words shudda changed along with each cut, as they lingered too long.  We can read two words in sub-second time.  At least change the font when you jump cut, Sweetie.  No wonder your content lacked hits.

Exactly. I read her resume and her parents first names appear to Russian in origin but her last name sounds to be Jewish. I'm not purposefully trying to make any sort of anti-semetic remark (trust me, as half my mom's family is Jewish) so please don't take it that way----what I'm getting at is that I've seen FAR too often the kids of well-to-do Russian-Jew parents seem to think they are perfect in every way being that's what their parents instilled in them as they were growing up. I think this same thing applies to non-jews just as well, of course, BUT in this situation I think it's a case of "my dad's friend owns the company and got me this job" to start with. My guess is that she'll find another high-paying gig soon enough with the help of her well-placed parents.

As an aside, I wish those on my mom's side of the family could have helped ME in some way but I sure as hell wouldn't have pranced about like this gal did in an attempt to show how she "knows better".

She's upset because her boss prizes quantity over quality, so she makes a "quality" video to quit her job. Sites like Mashable eat it up and talk about how "creative" she is, and call the video "epic."

Let's break this down.

She's been at her job for two whole years and doesn't like what upper management has her doing.

Instead of sticking with it, doing a good job, and earning promotions to the point where she can influence decisions, she decides to quit. Okay fine.

She is protesting that her boss just wants views, at the cost of providing quality content, so the video she makes:
- is her dancing
- to a song she didn't write or perform (and I'm guessing didn't license)
- with only a handful of repetative shots
- stitched together by edits that contribute nothing
- relying on a few, uninspiring lines of text to tell the story

And she gets over a million views in a day. She's done a good job of contradicting her own assertion that quality is important to get viewership.

I'm sure some small agency will snap her up, but she's going to have to work even harder for less. It's unlikely that an established employer is going to hire someone who has made a public video about leaving her job due to being dissatisfied over something so basic as, "I don't like doing what they ask me to do."

All the talk about how, "Millennials don't really act as entitled as the MSM reports," just fades into the background when I see something like this.

Hey, look!...A Millennial quitting her job, that other people would line up for weeks to get, because she doesn't like her company's business strategy.

Staged viral schlock and all that, but good lord Kanye West is terrible.  Not listening to radio or watching videos and all that for the last decade has really paid off, since I've managed to never hear anything the guy put out previously, but oy! what crap!

Now I can safely go back to ignoring everything he does and not waste a thought on whether I've missed anything of value.

Exactly. As a man who does hiring, I vet each person coming through. If a person applying had anything like this findable in their name, I'm not even gonna call for an interview. Just a straight NOPE.

More often than not, she can't produce or follow directions, hence she's frustrated. At the very least, attention whore who thinks it's all about her rather than the team.

Also, can't dance for fark and isn't even that self-aware.

Atomic Spunk: and a good worker should extend the same courtesy

How long would you put up with an underperforming employee before you fired them (and firing is most definitely a public event, even if the conversation is behind closed doors). For all you know she worked for an underperforming manager for 2 years before quitting (which again, is always public even if you don't post a [fairly anonymous] video about it) and she didn't say anything particularly damaging about her manager when she did. Exactly what sort of "courtesy" are you expecting from her?

But hey, you sound like a fun guy to work for. Where can I sign up?

2013-10-01 04:11:06 AM

Terrible Old Man: At the very least, attention whore who thinks it's all about her rather than the team.

As opposed to the attention-whore boss, who thinks it's all about his team and pretends that individual satisfaction is not important, or is indistinguishable from team satisfaction (or performance goals, or whatever other metric boss man has deemed worth his attention). Because it's totally impossible to do good work, contribute to the team, and still have individual desires. If she has any thought beyond how to make her boss's life better she's clearly an inferior human specimen (I mean, if she weren't she'd be the boss -- right?)

This woman might be a total a-hole and terrible at her job. Or maybe she's the nicest person in the world and excellent at her job. This video tells you virtually nothing about her in either of those aspects. It maybe wasn't a great idea, but it frankly doesn't seem that important to me, and the fact that you're making judgements about her value as an employee based on this video says a lot more about your biases than it does about her.

Terrible Old Man: If a person applying had anything like this findable in their name, I'm not even gonna call for an interview. Just a straight NOPE.

If a person with influence in hiring had any zero-tolerance rules to that effect they'd no longer be influencing hiring in my organization. Zero-tolerance is just a stupid in hiring managers as it is in school administrators.

If your hiring process isn't evidence-based it's just guessing, and as a general rule (a rule backed by decades of study into hiring practices) people are terrible at that type of guessing. Even worse, studies suggest that the worst guessers are the most confident, often emboldened by false-feedback experiences where the correctness of the initial guess is validated by something other than a measurement of the desired outcome (e.g. an accepted job offer is viewed as evidence of a correct decision to make an offer, rather than comparing the pre-hire evaluations to later employee performance).

Hiring is a complicated problem without a single clear solution but there are well-studied methodologies that can improve the process and by following them you can build your own data set to inform future decisions with provably relevant data. Being better at hiring is quite probably the most valuable thing you can do for your company; I sincerely hope you take your role seriously and undertake a more reliable process.

How do you quantify public bridge-burning in these wonderful methodologies? I think this lady has taken herself out of your data set.

First, I'm betting it's yet another viral video attempt - for what reason, I have no idea, but that's how it seems to go these days.

Second, if it's not a viral video attempt and you're going to be this unprofessional, why would you post it on the Internet? She might as well have said, "I wasted company time and resources, didn't have the professionalism to provide my employer with some degree of notice, couldn't muster the consideration to quit in person, and burned my bridges on the way out because I had a minor disagreement with my immediate manager, which I apparently didn't handle in any constructive manner."

She demonstrated that she's pretty much unemployable by anyone looking for a professional, considerate employee willing to work with people. And then placed that demonstration on the friggin' Internet.

But, of course, she's a Millennial. She thinks she's entitled to quit on her company's dime and with as much drama as she could muster.
