If I had to be the attorney who represented this sh*t slice in either his criminal or custody hearing, I'm pretty sure I'd rather just rather shred my license.

And yet, it didn't. Might have permanently farked him up, though. My heart goes out to the mom and kid. What a nightmare.

On a semi-related topic, would it be irony if he was found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection?

It would be. But attempted murder doesn't carry the death penalty in Washington. That and there have only been 3 lethal injections since they switched from hanging in 1998.

In other news: WA has been hanging people as recently as 1994.

I'm glad he's being charged with attempted murder and I hope they add a lot more charges if the kid suffers from this.

DING! DING!. I got a similar notion when I heard there was a "syringe full of drugs" laying on the child's chest. That has to be bullshiat, and makes me suspect the mother too.

In any scenario that results in the father passing out from an OD, he had to inject himself last. He either ends up with an empty syringe, or one he passed out in the middle of injecting himself.

There is no logical scenario that ends with him refilling a syringe and leaving it on the son. Doesn't mean he deserves custody, it just shows that the child needs to be put into foster care.

Anything this major, especially involving a child, demands that everyone on the scene be subjected to an investigation at minimum.  This is not a sexist statement, and the same would hold true if the roles were reversed.

Just because you don't want to believe something happened, isn't cause enough to dismiss it as a possibility.

If you click on the linked words in the article, it takes to articles with better information.

"Eric Emil Lehtinen, 37, is accused of repeatedly jabbing in young son with needles and injecting him with heroin and a cocktail of other drugs, among them ketamine, morphine and codeine.   He then injected himself with high doses of drugs, as well."

"Medical staff at the hospital found puncture wounds on his neck and buttocks, indicating needle sticks, court documents say."

"A needle was still sticking out of the boy's chest, according to police."

So, the needle wasn't found  onthe boy's chest but  in his chest.  The Gawker article fails to get the story straight.

Also found this:
"A search of Lehtinen's Redmond home turned up seven syringes containing what police believe are drugs as well as three used syringes in bedroom. A search also turned up $12,620 in cash in the home."

Daddy may be dealing too....though a good dealer never uses his own product so probably not dealing.   Of course the mother can now ask for (and will most likely get) full custody and have the father's visitation rights completely revoked.

fark_the_herald_angel_sings: Ok.. so the mom knows he has a problem with drugs to the point where she wanted drug testing as part of the divorce... and she leaves the kid with him anyway.... maybe not the best parent either?

"She had returned to the Seattle area for a job interview. She let her son stay with Lehtinen, though she had wanted the final child-custody order in the divorce to require drug tests.

Lehtinen told her that he had quit using drugs. She found him depressed, she told police, but didn't see any reason the boy couldn't stay with him."

Also, a few things may have occurred on why she left her son with him:

1) She may have scheduled the interview during a time when he had visitation.

2) She might not have been able to find or be able to afford a sitter and might not have family nearby or friends able to help out at the time she needed her son supervised.

3) A custodial agreement usually has a "Right of First Refusal" provision which basically means (in the context of this case) if the mother would need to leave the son with a babysitter for some reason, she is required to ask the father if he would want to watch the son while she goes to this interview.  If he says 'no' then she can get a sitter.  If he says 'yeah, I'll watch Junior" then she has to allow him to babysit their son.   If she doesn't do this and the court finds out, she could face different consequences and it would harm her chances of getting full custody.

We don't know all the facts in the case

Awarding custody to a woman who left a 4-year-old with someone who she knows is a heroin addict might not help either. The child should go to foster care.
