They built a house near Anchor Point on land they bought in 1994 for $500 an acre.

Step 1: go back in time to before the mortgage crisis tanked everyone.

Yeaaaaaaah. They're covered in dirt, poop in a shack outside, don't eat meat - DONT EAT MEAT - and that house looks like something straight from Detroit.

I'll pay my taxes and eat my Murican burger. Thanks Obama.

I think it's hilarious that these college educated people have chosen to live in the dirt and grime just like their ancestors that struggled and worked hard all their lives in the hopes that one day, their descendants could go to college and not have to live in the dirt and grime all their lives.

fusillade762: I'm assuming they still have to pay taxes.

They might very well make so little income that they don't. Especially if they're intentionally trying to avoid taxes by getting paid on cash or with in-kind services.

Living up there appeals to me, but the way they're doing it seems like too much work. I'd rather just earn my money down here and get a cabin to summer in. I can cope with never being a "real Alaskan".

Mind you I'm not at all against the national parks or paying people to work in them, just pointing out that Subby wasn't paying attention at all.

Maybe the grass is always greener. Or maybe they know something their ancestors didn't, like: modern conveniences demand a certain lifestyle that they don't care for.

Obviously, the only reason anyone would choose to isolate themselves from the majority of other human beings and live off of what they produce with their own hands is that they hate black people.

That's not off the grid.  Off the grid is living half a dozen bays away northwest from the town of Kodiak.  There is nothing there.  You are a subsistence hunter/farmer unless you can afford to have supplies flown in by seaplane.  Then often the only money coming in is the Alaskan Dividend and whatever pelts you can have flown out.

I've had a chance to spend a week out with a family who lived like that.  It was fantastic.

Oh absolutely.  That whole living in the wilderness thing is bound to do wonders for their kids.  Awesome parents.  Now they'll be social outcasts 'and' badly educated at the same time.

Gotta love the parents who'll throw their kids under the bus because living in society is just too darned hard.

Actually, AJE is doing a phenomenal job of covering news in the old fashioned way.

They're fully funded by the Qatari government as the jackhole up there said, so they don't need to worry about ratings or advertisers to keep the lights on.  They're focused solely on becoming a hard-hitting old-style news source.

You might find some interesting stuff in there, considering they cover America better than American news sources do.

Jesus, man. Did you even read the article you linked?

It cites one single member of that family--a black sheep, so to speak--who is associated with KSM.

It also states this, which you somehow managed to leave out:
"The American military is already a major presence in Qatar and says the royal family has cooperated fully. If there is a war with Iraq, Qatar is where U.S. Central Command will be located."

So go to bed scared tonight, again. But don't forget to turn off Fox, because their fear-mongering to an empty room is just a waste of electricity.

Yeah, they sell produce in Homer, work for other people who (presumably) pay taxes, and it looks like they buy commercially produced clothing, appliances, and vehicles. Not so much 'self-reliant' as 'neo-hippies', but whatever. There are places where people live like this right here in WA, but I like Seattle. Better food and shelter for an equivalent amount of cost, factoring in their sweat equity. Don't get me wrong, I still plan to have edible landscaping at my home near running fresh water and live about an hour from the city, but their setup seems excessively difficult for having to hold part time jobs anyway...

The point of contention was the idea that life is wasted without higher education.  Are you changing the subject?  If so, you need to provide more information because what you said, in context, doesn't make sense.

Yes, I have contempt for people who put their own ridiculous hippie notions and selfish wants above their own children.

They go to bed feeling good about themselves in spite of the atrocious position that they've put their kids into.  Badly educated, no experience growing up around other people, no sensible perspective on the world and society as a whole.

But fark all that stuff, they get to live off the grid and shiat in a whole in the ground and grow their own food, because fark the man or something.

Personally, that's a little farther than I want to live off the grid, but I have met a few people like that.  It's a lifestyle that requires a lot of work, dedication, more than I want anyway.

But you rather have to admire their tenacity, they have been there a long time.  Probably live debt-free, and there's nothing wrong with that.
