The man who would be the holder of the football.

The man who would be the face of the nation to the world.

But thankfully wasn't.

I think Hispanics understand the GOP perfectly well: the GOP "tent" houses racists and xenophobes who want brown people out of 'Merica.

The reason that Mitt Romney lost is that the American electorate discovered that deep down, underneath the surface, he is actually Mitt Romney.

Actually Mitt, the sole reason you lost is because you're a plutocratic douchebag who believes the 1% should own the other 99% as chattel.  Every other derptastic misfire that spewed from your entitled, arrogant gob was just gravy on that particular biscuit.

I'm always more freaked out that Ann Coulter called the election a year or so in advance.

2013-09-29 06:04:33 PM
The sole reason he lost was that people DID understand him. He laid out pretty well what he thought, and his ability to stick to his guns, and he did it with panache and style, and KEPT telling us how effective a leader and how resolute he'd be. Which is to say, not very.

He thinks that folks didn't get it. People picked up what he was putting down, and that was the problem. His lack of anything like awareness beyond his bubble was a part of that, and it was just a symptom of his greater problem, in that he felt that he was OWED his shot to enact a lot of other folks' policies with his name scrawled beneath them, so that he could secure his legacy beyond helping turn the Olympics into an even further corrupted version of itself, and signing marriage equality into policy, and the same health care reform that folks are fighting tooth and nail to keep from being enacted everywhere in this land.

He has always been a sniveling little weasel who has looked to the public coffers as a personal trust fund to dip into for he and his friends. From his days with the UMaine system on the board, to looking for public funds for dozens of "little" projects for friends and relations, to the Olympics--where he certainly did a lot of work to steer public dollars to get the village "ready" for the show to come to town--to the State of Massachusetts. He has been a tireless champion of putting public dollars into private hands, and out of the palms of "takers" who only give back in their sales tax, property tax, income tax, and not like the stalwarts that he considers "his" people who should be forgiven their taxes, because...socialism I guess. He and others thought that they got "off message" when, in fact, people paid pretty decent attention to the words that came out of his mouth, and the other words that came out the other side of it. And the actions that he performed while in office.

In the end, that is the problem with this idea that "outreach" is the "answer." It is a disdain for the public in general, and that if only they can find the "right" words, then folks will just fall into line. It's not about words. It's about actions. It's about policy. It's about history of words and actions being fulfilled, and Romney and many others simply don't get that in order to take the moral high ground, you have to actually occupy that territory first...

That and Karl Rove's meltdown caused much laughter and mirth in the Coco LaFemme household.  When we heard that Romney was waiting on conceding because he had to write something first, oh did we cackle with glee.  Even quasi-senile John McCain had a concession speech prepared in 2008.

It's true.  The GOP is all about the opportunity for rich people to get richer.

Don't forget about the Boston fireworks that nobody in the city knew about, designed to usher in the Age of Romney.  Or him cancelling the campaign's credit cards as soon as Obama won Ohio.  In fact, it's easy to see that the Romney Campaign was nothing but a clusterfark.  It's amazing to see how the Republicans kept their heads in the sand for so long that they had to eventually double down on it and 'unskew' the polls, only to get their asses kicked in 2012.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Why does anyone still care?

But you know Romney hasn't.  That's why he's still doing interviews instead of taking a few years off and letting the heat die down.  Not that it would work (people figured out that Republican trick a while ago), but instead you see this jackass trying to salvage something from 2012.  But no:  he was defeated, and that was it for him.  And the last person to know it -- just like on Election Night 2012 -- is Romney himself.

Aristocles: Jesus H.W. Christ

Let me get this straight. Romney opens up and honestly reflects on his campaign. He comes to the conclusion that he should have invested more on ads in Hispanic media, and he's criticized for this by Farklibs?

Where's the beef?

No Republican is going to have any kind of appeal to Hispanics for the next 10 or 15 years, and it's nobodies fault but Republicans as a whole who just cannot seem to shut up about illegal immigration and brown people taking all our STUFF.

The funny thing is that the GOP has swayed so far to the radical right these days that even Dubya knew how important the Hispanic vote was to the future of the GOP and his 2004 election was a high water mark of sorts for the proportion of the Hispanic vote that he received. Too bad for the GOP the xenophobic, racist Teahadists took control of the party and are hell bent on making sure the GOP dies the same slow death as the white majority of the country.

Imagine what sort of country we would be in today if the Teabaggers hadn't hijacked the Republican party because Hispanics had swung hard in favor of the party. The GOP would be an altogether much more moderate and inclusive party. Instead, they've become the party of dying old white people.

The only reason Republicans got votes (and took a Presidential election) in the past 20 years is because a kid got returned to Cuba and pissed off a bunch of exiles and their families, using techniques that Republicans would embrace in the new Millenium.

First thing I thought of as well.

Didn't Mitt's ancestors flee the US for Mexico at some point to avoid the anti-polygamy laws?

You'd think he'd speak better Spanish.

Yeah, so Mitt's meanderings about failing to pander sufficiently to the Hispanic demographic entirely miss the point that Mitt failed with almost every demographic beyond old, white, male and christian for some very good reasons most of which have to do with the rampant xenophobia and sexism based on religious extremist that have dominated the party's platform for a good long while now.

I know Mitt isn't the sharpest tool in the shed so I'll use small words here.

Hey, Mitt.

It's not that that you didn't polish the turd sufficiently, it's that your so-called vision for  America was a steaming turd to begin with.

K?

/Alternately... ¿Qué?

I don't see anything different in this retrospection than what we've seen with previous post-election Romney statements, its just another "i'm sorry you didn't understand me properly" non-apology apology.

The problem isn't, it has never been, that folks didn't get your message, Romney.  The problem is that they *did*.  Your message sucked.

FTFA: Mitt Romney has had some time to reflect on what went wrong last November. His main conclusion: the Hispanic community didn't understand his immigration stance well enough.

No, I think they understood the concept self-deportation quite well. I think his problem was the Hispanic community actually understood his immigration stance.

In a video secretly recorded from a fundraising dinner at a private donor's home, Romney is reported to have joked that "had [my father] been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot of winning this."
"But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico," Romney quipped. "He lived there for a number of years. I mean, I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."
