I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense.
And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs.

+1 subby, I lol'd

Kareem is no dummy. He was famously like a morose teenager when young, but he learned and he became engaging and interesting to hear.

A well thought out article. Now if it were only written by someone who a teenager would read.

Hmm... learn who you are, become an individual, then play a team sport where you become a part of a collective.

If you can name a reason someone is your friend they aren't really your friend.

Listen to Advice? I've done so much better since I stopped doing that.

Heroes are outliers. More is to be learned from the mistakes of others, the failure is data.

Bookish knowledge has nothing on practical wisdom, but might be easier to fake.

If you think it's wrong to be racist but someone in your group says something racist (or sexist, or ant-Semitic, or anti-gay), then tell them you don't agree and that you don't think they should make such statements.

Yeah, but what if you think it's right to be racist?

What about the other way around?  What if I'm the only racist one among my friends?  Would Kareem still tell me to defend my beliefs?

Perhaps distinguishing between "collective" and "team" is a matter of attitude? You can be an individual and still work towards a common goal of a team or of a community.

And yes, there is value in listening to advice. A wise person evaluates the advice and *then* decides whether or not to apply it.

Trying to sound wise is a poor substitute for actual wisdom.

He learned his lesson. Bruce Lee kicked his ass, so now he tries to avoid physical fights.

The only issue I really have with this advice is that it is advertised as being relevant only to boys. Everything here is just as relevant to a girl working to become a woman.

Kareem is a very wise man. But a crappy pilot.

wildcardjack: Hmm... learn who you are, become an individual, then play a team sport where you become a part of a collective.

The ability to act in concert with a group in pursuit of a shared goal is a useful skill. Team sports are one way of learning that skill.

If you can name a reason someone is your friend they aren't really your friend.

I have no idea what you mean by this. I could give you a host of reasons that my friends are my friends: shared interests, shared values, engaging personalities, dependability in a crisis... I could go on and on.

Listen to Advice? I've done so much better since I stopped doing that.

One must learn to tell bad advice from good advice. This is often learned by following some of each.

Heroes are outliers. More is to be learned from the mistakes of others, the failure is data.

Learning from the mistakes of others is much less costly than learning from one's own mistakes. Most people are unable to do this.

Bookish knowledge has nothing on practical wisdom, but might be easier to fake.

Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge in the right way, at the right time. Therefore, knowledge is a prerequisite for wisdom, but not a guarantee of it. You will find intelligent people who lack wisdom, but never a wise person who lacks intelligence. It is also worth noting that wisdom, like knowledge, can be confined to a narrow area of specialty.
