Lane Kiffin told Alshon Jeffery that if he played for South Carolina that Jeffery would be pumping gas for a living. Today Jeffery is playing for the Bears and Kiffin is unemployed.

I guess that was a joke on Volunteers fans' hatred for Kiffin, but it doesn't make much sense, since they don't need a coach.

They do need a coach. Just not Kiffin.

He'll probably replace Roger Goodell as commissioner of the NFL now. If you ever wanted proof that nepotism is how the world works, look no further than this guy. If I'd been rewarded as richly for failure, I'd be a billionaire.

We have a great coach who's also a really good guy. I guess you were just in a hurry to make the first Tennessee joke.

I'm not bitter. But I do hope his wife leaves him next.

Well lets see he next faces Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Missouri, Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky.

I think the vols beat Kentucky, are competitive with Auburn and lose the rest by at least 2 scores. What are your expectations?

I think we can put together six wins. Our schedule would tough for any team, much less such a young one. We'll see. The fan base is ready to be patient for now and see how his recruited class works out next year.

USC can have Derek Dooley.

I was rooting against the USC Trojans in every game because this fellow was their coach and am glad to see that they have fired him. But since he still has a winning record and is an excellent recruiter, I don't imagine that he is going to be out of a job in major college football very long. But where ever he goes, I'm rooting against that team. This guy just annoys me.

People are missing the point here. Hiring Kiffin was part of the sanctions that the NCAA imposed on USC. Now that the penalty period is finished is time to move on.

I would be surprised to see him get another head coach gig. Kiffen as head coach has been like a smoking hot blonde, but the word's out now that she has the clap.

Bobby Petrino is employed, your argument is invalid.

He can recruit, but I've been saying he was Lame ever since the 2005 Rose Bowl... He called the terrible game for the talent he possessed as OC.

Tennessee dogged a bullet with him jumping ship. USC was too eager to hire Kiffin away from the Vols when he had not proven himself as a capable (football) field general.

I was one of those TN fans that hated it when I heard he was hired.  His only claim to fame was his father's success.  He did a good job recruiting...if all you care about is talent and not character, and which all fell apart only a few months after his departure because most of the recruits bailed or had behavioral problems.  The only reason he lasted so long at USC was because he got a pass for a couple of years with the NCAA punishment.  I doubt he'll get another high level head-coaching job now that he's been exposed, but with the amount of money he's sucked out of the institutions he's been at, he probably doesn't need to work another day in his life...which is the sad part.

USC lent him $500k to buy a $5.5 million home and has the right now to demand immediate repayment. I hope they do.

Not much a coach can do with the level of talent he has on the field...which is almost none.  Dooley was a terrible, terrible recruiter and left the coffers empty.  The starting QB wouldn't even make it as a back-up at most high-level division 1 schools, and there is absolutely no depth.  Dooley couldn't even land Tennessee recruits, which was pathetic.  Butch Jones seems to be picking up that slack and is already recruiting much better.  You can't really judge what type of coach he is until he's had a couple of years to recruit and coach up those recruits.

But I'm sure you know all of that already since you seem to be such an expert on college football.

I'm half-expecting him to fail up to UTexas or the 49ers at this point, but, alas, I think we've seen the last of little Lane Kiffin in elite HC positions.

We lose the next 3 but the last 4 are a toss up but I feel good about us winning the last 2. Winning the last 3 would be great and get us into a bowl game. Next years recruiting class is also monstrous so we will be talented but young next year. In two years we will be competitive with anyone in the conference. Remember we lost 1 recruiting class when Kiffin left, another when all of Dooleys assistants quit, mad a 3rd when Dooley was fired. It will take awhile to build the talent level back. Jones is a good coach with mediocre players.

2013-09-29 10:59:14 AM
Great recruiter, why do we say that? If you can recruit 50 players it can't be 20 QBs and 30 wideouts. Somehow that may come back and bite you in the ass. Usually when a coach is fired you hear that he was a good guy but just couldn't get the job done. I have yet to hear anyone say he was a good guy and that may tell us something about man.

The way he left Tennessee will tell you all you need to know. He got a call from USC and left Knoxville that night leaving his current players to find out about it through ESPN. He did however make several calls to UT recruits asking them to follow him to Cal.

oh and Taj Boyd had committed to Tennessee out of high school and Kiffin told him the Vols didn't want him and for him to find another college. So yeah his recruiting skills aren't so good if you ask me
