Some states don't require a reason to fire anyone, as long as it's not based on things like race or religion.  Secondly, I wonder if there's more to the story.

2013-09-29 08:24:06 AM
Or it could be a really clever ploy to get sympathy and a new job.  Who know, it's a blog that tells one side of a story, I have no idea why it's on CNN.  That should be the bigger story.

I started a new job a few years ago and they gave me a desk and PC in the main open plan office while the retail unit I was going to run was still being built. First thing I did was install a picture of Buffy The Vampire Slayer as the desktop background, a pic of Sarah Michelle Gellar wearing bright red tight leather pants. Anyone asked and my response was "I love the show".
After the store was finished and I moved there the PC was given to the finance director. His first instruction to IT? Keep the desktop background....

/Just remembered another instance. The CEO/Owner of the company visited the store and was looking at the laptop display. He asked me what the screensaver password was. I looked at him and said "I set them up". He said "It's Buffy isn't it?" "Yep."

//Of course Buffy isn't in the same league as MLP.
///They're just weird....

Protected class or otherwise, why wouldn't a decent company be concerned they were diluting their public relations value or harming their potential to attract and retain good people? I think I answered my own question there.

THIS.

You don't talk to the bosses daughter, ever.  Especially when she's a minor, and especially when you share interests with her.

If you cannot see how that comes off as possible pedo behavior, you really do have issues, aside from watching little girl cartoons.

A little boy who watches sports and talks to adults about sports is not the same thing.  Pro sports do have some marketing geared towards younger viewers, but by and large it's an adult topic with an adult following.

The little boy was being mature, as where the brony was identifying with children(literally, volunteering interaction with a little girl).  If you don't find that the least bit skeevy, you may have the same twisted view of what is acceptable behavior.

Watch it, fine.  Don't use it as an icebreaker with little kids, Micheal Jackson.

2013-09-29 08:36:18 AM
That's too bad. Go find a hobby that doesn't make you seem like a pedophile, especially when complimenting the boss's daughter on her t-shirt, and things will go much better for you. Or not, but if not be ready for everybody to think you're creepy.

I looked up that page just to see if it was there.

Someone hacked the Blue Whale page to have a line that says "I have large nipples".  Being a doofus, I was going to edit the page to put [citation needed] at the end, but I couldn't find the line ANYWHERE.  How the hell did they do that.

His "bronyism" may have been the last straw for the boss and other employees. There's more to the story that's not being told. I would love to hear from his co-workers and employer.

2013-09-29 08:40:57 AM
I don't buy it. Any adult male who is obsessed with MLP to the point of being a self titled `brony` more likely than not has serious mental health issues or emotional problems. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy actually got fired for something like masturbating at his desk in his grandma's underwear but has convinced himself that it's because of discrimination instead. People get fired for good reasons all the time and rather than take responsibility for it, it's always someone else's fault.

2013-09-29 08:42:39 AM
I told her I liked her shirt , something  innocent the same way people go "those are some cool shoes" to a kid,  nothing weird at all.

Sorry, you're wrong. It is weird.

It was a few guys against  me which I thought was weird as I don't make fun of the stuff they like

Because they're not 30-something year-old men into a cartoon made for 10 year-old girls.

It doesn't matter if it's MLP or Jesus, leave the proselytizing at home. What kind of moron is this guy that he thinks this is a work-appropriate conversation topic? No, it's creepier. It's a show for little girls, and if you dig it, more power to you. But people are just as entitled to think your creepy for diggin in.

Now, as for work - if you talk about ANYTHING other than WORK, you are taking a risk than someone is going to take offense and get your ass in hot water. Could be sports, could be politics, could be anything. So it's best not to fly your freak flag at work, ever.

Stick to work and stay employed.

People are in to all sorts of sports, TV shows, movies, etc. Just because you may not be in to it, doesn't necessarily make it weird.
However, as a self proclaimed Brony he should have been well aware that others find the brony culture VERY unusual.
And with that being said, if you know your interests are outside of the norm and even are perceived as having a sexual or pedophile-type correlation, it's best to keep such things out of a professional environment.

2013-09-29 09:11:19 AM
Jeezus. Rule one is to always keep your embarrassing, guilty pleasures secret. You do not talk about that shiat with your co-workers, no matter what it is. The water cooler is not a place for it. Talk culture in general terms, certainly, but if your office mates are the type to spring into machismatic mockery why the hell would you ever bring up a topic like that?

If he had a Rainbow Dash toy, I'd have fired his ass too. Poor taste in Ponies is unforgivable.

I think the brony thing is creepy. I'm not saying my feelings are right or correct, but that's how I feel about it.

I also think there is more to this story.  If not, and it happened the way the fired guy explained it, then it's bullshiat he was fired.

HAHAHAHA. Another thread where I get to say "Welcome to the corporate/business computing world."
On work PCs you get:
Fixed resolution (arrived at by exhaustive end user interview/testing and feedback)
Fixed desktop background (company logo on an eye-easy blue)
Fixed screen timeout
Fixed screen saver with password required on wake
No control panel access t these items (it's WORK, GTFBTW)

You require MLP to be happy? Bring a printed piece for your desk. Expect some people to think "Ewwwwww, a grown man?"

That's a double standard. I admit that I don't understand Bronies but they don't deserve to be persecuted and fired. I have an employee who won't shut up about his boring hobbies but I don't fire the guy. Come on.
