And the fact that this ties into all those shootings of public officials earlier this year makes it even more of a WTF situation

That Sheriff was a raping machine. He was truly raping everybody, man woman and child.

I would make some anti-cop comment, but this was West Virginia on the Kentucky border. what else would you expect?

Family members of the suspect in Crum's shooting, Tennis Maynard, have claimed Crum raped Maynard when he was a teen, which motivated the shooting.

When which one was a teen? Who does 'he' refer to, since one of these people is known to be a man, and the other is named after a yuppy past-time?

WV has the most corrupt judicial system in the US, the only reason you don't hear about it is because they are getting away with it. In my county, there is a deputy who was charged with around 70 cases of sexual abuse, including against children in his care(under 10 years old), against a few 12-16 year old girls, and against a few prisoners in his care. He is friends with the judge, and the judge keeps delaying the trial.. he is facing a minimum of 10 years in jail, but knowing our courts he will get probation and MAYBE home confinement. The sheriff knew about everything, and covered it up for a long time, and he is not in trouble for it...The fact that there has not been a shooting around here like the one in the story surprises me.

Welcome to Ky/WV small town life.  And you guys think all of the hardcore folks are in gangs in the big cities.  Pssshhh....

But they keep voting for these same crooks. Because, you know, unless you vote R or D you're wasting your vote.

Been there a few times on business.  Real shiathole of an area.  Depressing that there's places like that in the US.

it's like that around here too.
a veritable "good ol' boys club" of politicians, judges and cops.

one judge here sexually harassed a girl that had a case before him. when she turned him down he had one of his cop buddies pull her over and plant drugs on her.

Ghastly levels of corruption are the norm rather than the exception in most non-affluent counties, especially in rural southeast ones. The amount of drug- selling, gun-running, embezzlement, prostitution, rape, and thievery that is committed directly by law enforcement is bad enough, but then when you add those same crimes that they turn a blind eye on that are committed by their coworkers or buddies, it's enough to make you weep in horror.

I get 'gross', 'disturbing', 'scary' out of this story, but I don't get how a bad man being a very bad man is 'weird'.

Reading that, it sounded exactly like every other police and judicial system in a town of 30,000.

I think that the only thing missing is someone having sex with a farm animal. Although, in this case, I'm not sure if the human would be pitching or catching.

You don't have to keep much of a secret if everyone already knows what you're up to.

doesn't matter, according to Fark experts, no conspiracy can exist because no secret (big or small) can be kept. :)

Apparently none of this was a secret down there. Everybody was just to afraid to tell anybody that could do something about it.

I grew up in a small town in WV.   The sheriff was cracking down on the drug trade in town.  The deputy's sons were the biggest dealers around.   The deputy shot and killed  the sheriff in a hunting "accident". Case closed.
