They could use it to serve warrants to the elderly and infirm, but they'd have to include a SWAT team for it to really be effective in that role.

I'd love to have one for my commute to work.

However, we've all had this discussion before. Cops should not have military vehicles and the like. This has gotten ridiculous.

I know they want to be prepared for anything, but there's a limit. We (those they protect) should have more of a say in what they are allowed to field.

Just give the damn things to NATO and other allies like we usually do.

"The MaxxPro MRAP is built to withstand ballistic arms fire, mine blasts, IEDs, and other emerging threats," according to the Navistar website.

If you've reached the point where you feel you need to defend against mines and IEDs, then you should stop calling yourselves a "police force" and choose a more appropriate description.

Useless in a battle. Easily defeated without the proper support. What kind of timid soul needs an armored box to deliver a warrant?

The kind that are prohibited from NOT spending the money they get from asset forfeiture.

The SWAT team?  I think Dallas probably needs several of those.

No, I've driven those, they're just an armored truck, and the model pictured is missing the extra armor plating on the side.

They're great for convoy security though, especially with a .50 cal in the turret.

Yes. "For free". The armored truck fairy just left it under a pillow one night and no one paid anyone for the materials and labor.

When was the last time any SWAT cop was wounded inside their vehicle by a bad guy ?

Yes, our tax dollars have already been spent on them.

But, fta - The Department of Defense was had no use for the vehicles and has given them to local police departments instead of letting them collect dust in warehouses.

So, why not put them to use. Better yet, sell them on Craig's list or Ebay and maybe make a profit.

Next up: giving police departments a few of the thousands of M1A1 tanks currently sitting in the high desert

/no SWAT team should be without one

So the media definition of "tank" has evolved from anything with tracks, to anything with armor.  We call those MRAPs, not tanks.

I really think that someone needs to stop this militarization of the police.  They are suffering from the delusion that they are actually in a war rather than serving the public.  That being said the below pictures are necessary:

How about no. I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, where the hell is the need for the police to have this type of vehicle? If we had street gangs who used fully automatic machine guns and rocket launchers, really did mine the streets with IEDs, and had the resources to build their own improvised tanks then I could see the need to respond in kind. But this isn't Gotham City!!! If the police feel that they will need this, then the future for this country is very bleak.

Not particularly effective against crime. Pretty good against an insurgency.

I don't see the traversable turret, so it's not a tank. It must be a self-propelled gun.

That's because it's built by the same company.  Navistar used to be International Trucks.  International did and still does build school buses under the IC Corp brand name.  That trucks front end is the same thing that takes young tykes to their schoolin.

This is their Military arm.  They build a lot of support vehicles for the Armed Forces.

Well, considering that the police would be out-gunned by your typical NRA member, I don't think this is all bad.

Armed nut-jobs in standoffs with police, or snipers.  Every city has those every now and then.

It's just an armored truck, it isn't a tank.  It isn't even an armored car.  It's a pretty reasonable thing for a police force to have.  Military surplus vehicles has been given to police for a long time.  A free mine resistant military APC costs less than a custom designed non-mine resistant police vehicle.  It costs less to run than an M-113.

But it's used by the MILITARY! Just like AR-15s are a super-weapon that compares with the M-16, so, too, does this truck compare favorably with an M1A2.

Some other Farker commented in a thread some time back that if cops feel the need to be armed, why shouldn't regular people feel the same way?!

That would be an entirely different discussion, and one we would probably end up arguing on the same side of.
Would they be worth more on Ebay, or just for value of the scrap metal? I don't actually know.

It would be better to melt them down for scrap than give them to the cops.  The police should NEVER have access to military weapons or armor.
