I would say that "try to disprove my point, I have a gun" is the defining, all encompassing symbolic image of the Unburdened with Proof Generation that Fox News has created.

Was his point "I am dangerous, you should fear me?"

That his act of dumbassery appears to have provoked bipartisan interest in banning rifles in the Capitol building is a heartwarming end to the story. Well done, gun-toting numpty!

"I'm a strong supporter of the second amendment. And I'm also a member of the NRA, but I tell you there's many buildings that you should not be able to carry a firearm into and one of them is the state Capitol," Republican Sen. Carroll Leavell said.

Oh, I see. It's okay for everyone else to have to be exposed to intimidation and potential harm from these mouth breathing f*ckwits but as soon as they get near you it's "HURRR DURRR!! BAN TEH GUNZORSS!!1"

Oh and I'm sure the fine senator is perfectly okay with YOUR kids being surrounded by heavily armed bozos in their schools but not near the ruling class. Nope. That's where the line is drawn.

I'm gonna laugh when one of these guys "proving a point" gets Zimmermaned.

I'll never understand the point in carrying an AW-15 in public unless you're actively spraying hot motherfarking lead at all and sundry.
Honestly, it's like walking around with any other expensive tool, would you walk around all day with a Festool router or a Porter Cable Drywall sander, but not actually use it?
Tools are for work, there's no good reason for carrying one if all you're going to do is display it.

Is the "point" that most gun rights folks are irrational, fanatical lunatics whose fixation with guns completely overshadows any sense of perspective or consideration of the public good?

Because we already knew that.

An "AW"-15? For a slip, it kind of fits.

Are the gun nuts all about "proving a point" now? Here in Appleton we had a couple of jack-wagons 'proving a point' that they needed their AR-15's for protection at a farmers market.

See, what you're missing here is that State Senators and Representatives are important people, and if one of them were to be accidentally injured or killed by an irresponsible gun owner, it would be of greater concern than if the victim were, say, a janitor or someone at the supermarket.

Perhaps the compromise here is to further insulate the Senators and Representatives from the general public with increased security measures, while still allowing the more common people in the Capitol - office support staff, pages, etc - to be needlessly endangered for political purposes.

It's "proving a point" in about the same way as an 10-year-old holding his hand a half-inch from his sisters face while shouting "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!" About the same level of emotional maturity and intellectual development as well.

"Look at me, I'm doing something likely to intimidate and frighten a large number of people, and no one knows whether I'm not the next unhinged individual going on the nation's next public shooting spree, but I'm not technically breaking any laws! I'm proving a point!"

Farking man-child. The only difference is his toy guns fire real bullets.

I agree. Perhaps in some kind of large building segmented off into little rooms with a toilet and a sink with bars for doors (we could call them "cells"). Have armed guards all around the perimeter and a massive fence with barbed wire at the top. Every day they could go get some exercise in a special "yard" with their fellow politicians. Provide three modest but nutritious meals per day and communal showers where they can exchange ideas and relax. Their families could come visit them at designated hours but only through bullet proof glass (can't take the risk) and absolutely NO TOUCHING.

Yes. This could work... yanno... for their "safety".

I'm with you on the 'pro-gun' thing. My problem is people like
This make it hard for me to be 'pro-gun'. They make it an all or nothing argument, basically chuckleheads. This is why we can't have a real conversation on gun control.

That and if any meaningful gun is passed the next time the repubs have the upper hand they will just lift it a la bush and the assault weapon ban. Thanks a lot for that guys.

Two things that should require an intellegence test to participate:
1. Owning a gun.
2. Holding public office.

As much as I love guns (as some of you probably know) I agree. I'm all about carrying a concealed handgun when I go out. A couple of times I've carried openly just because I could, but much like going to a nudist beach or farking a horse in places that allow it just because you can, it gets old. I did it just to do it, and now I don't want the attention any more.

I can see carrying a rifle if you're heading to the range, going to a gunshow to sell or trade it, and taking it to a shop to get fixed or work done on it, or even if you're going hunting, and you are driving a jeep with no doors or something and you don't want to leave it unsecured, and you realised you were out of beef jerky, and you had to stop and get some.

Maybe even get a bunch of your gunnut friends, get a permit, and have a "We're allowed to carry guns" parade with signs and shiat so people know it's just a bunch of your run-of-the-mill gunnuts, and not some potentially crazy guy walking down the street with not but a rifle and a hard-on.

As stupid as not knowing the difference between "capital" and "capitol" or that "capitol building" is redundant because by definition a capitol is a building?

Same down here in Madison -- a couple of yahoos walking down State Street, making sure everyone saw their firearms. Seriously, if the definition of a terrorist is someone whose actions are calculated to sow fear, I don't see how this doesn't qualify.

I had a nailset in the tool pocket of my workjeans which I forgot to disarm myself of before going to the airport.  The TSA lady held it up like it was a derringer pistol.  "What is THIS?"  Clearly it's a deadly weapon in the right hands.
