Don't even ask how she got the rolls of quarters out.

I am trying to wrap my head around how many 1s and 5s it would take during a 180 day school year to get to that 3,000,000$.

3 million over 7 years
430k a year (which reminds me, WHERE did this money go? what did she spend that much money on?? LOL)

$2,400 a day
2-400 kids 10 to 5 dollars each?

got to love the complete lack of oversight.
WHERE was the money supposed to go and didnt someone see the whole in the budget?
of course, as the accountant, she just hid the missing money ....

After 7 years and 3 million dollars, I think I would have said it was good enough instead of continuing to push my luck.

/Though it looks like they just pulled the 3 million dollar number out of nowhere
//Seems awfully high to me

I thought the headline meant she'd used the money for a succession of costly boob jobs

Nothing about where the cameras were.

And how many years of video was collected to get to $3M.

This caper finally went tits up. This could have been why Ms. Lucy, the cafeteria server, lost her home and her family, and was last seen down around the tracks and won't be coming back.

But there are so many more she wanted to help.

The headline said $3,000,000 but the story said more like $2,000,000.  If there are 180 days in a school year and she did this for 7 years, that's 1260 days she had the potential to steal money - unless there was cash to handle on non-school days.  If she did really embezzle the $2m figure, that's a little over $1587/day.  Assume that kids don't bring anything much bigger than a $20, she'd have to smuggle out almost 80 bills every day.  If they have video evidence of her embezzling cash in her bra, she may well have done so.  But it might be possible that the school lunch program has other financial problems and she's a convenient scapegoat.

2013-09-28 07:23:03 AM
If it was all 20's, that'd be 330 lbs worth of bills.

Possible to do over 7 years, but I don't really believe it. It's likely they are pinning everything on her, but there was multiple people with their hands in the till.

2013-09-28 07:30:58 AM
how much money is a school lunch today for a high school student? it was 55 cents for me. yeah i'm old.
imho she wasn't stealing the money from the registers before it was counted. she was cooking the books with double billing or whatever and then taking the register cash [all the twenties] for the amount she fudged. so make a phony invoice or pad a real bill and then take all the 20's in the office safe.

Sounds like a big bust.

So either:
1. She was routinely searched while leaving the premises
2. She was too stupid to just put the money in her purse / handbag / pockets

A women near me was skimming tens of thousands off the local council. Her job was to collect the money from parking machines, reconcile cash with expected totals and bank it. It was only when someone from the government audit office came along and said "WTF?" and got them to check some past results that they realised she'd been pocketing 10% of the money for 10 years.

Funniest one was a guy who was doing the parking at Bristol Zoo. The zoo thought he was working for the council. The council thought he was working for the zoo. They only found out when the zoo called the council to ask where he was as parking was getting out of hand. The guy had just disappeared and someone estimated he'd made £7m.

Every time cops see cash it is either:

A. Drug money (confiscate)
B, Stolen money (confiscate)

The story indicates she was an accountant for the *district*, not a single school -- so more than likely there was a central location that all the schools in the district sent their cash to, so it could be processed & deposited, and she was somehow dipping into that.

==========

Yup, there was no proper audit.

Anyone familiar with the Crazy Eddie chain of discount electronics stores that operated in the the NYC area back in the 70s-80s?  The owner, Eddie Antar, put together one of biggest stock frauds of the 80s.  He got away with it until his Madoff-type scheme finally collapsed because he didn't know when to quit.  His scheme wasn't very sophisticated, but he got away with it for as long as he did because the auditors were asleep, and this investors really wanted to believe they had found a pot of gold.

/Never trust anyone.

Ain't that truth .. sweet yodeling Jesus ..  plus how could the school district itself not notice that much missing cash?

Article fails to mention that she had jacked the price of a school lunch from 2.10to 14.95 - (17.95 if you get icecream or chocolate milk). So she was just padding the boobs, er uh, books, with extra profit.

-=-
That's why we are making adjustments here in the comment area to make it more true.

Big bra, nobody noticed large amounts of cash missing for the longest time, she probably got tagged with every loss of money for seven years- just because, the cops stole... er... confiscated the stolen money, and a speculation she may have stole quarters too.
It's our job here.

It's one thing for an accountant to embezzle the usual ways with fake vendors, account transfers, roundings, and so on. It's quite another to steal the physical cash.

My guess is that this simple theft of physical cash is being used to hang some other financial issues on.
