Trigeminal Neuralgia is a devastating condition that causes extreme pain (similar to being electrocuted) and has no cure.  Treatment is typically with a combination of anti-convulsant medications and narcotic pain killers.  Unfortunately many patients develop tolerances to these medications, which eventually makes treating the condition impossible.  Once that point is reached, neuro surgery is the only option.  The most common surgical treatment is  microvascular decompression.  In that procedure a form of Teflon is used to create a cushion between the Trigeminal nerve and the adjacent blood vessel that is often the cause of the pain.
