Top ten lists like this are always doomed to fail. There are always more than ten good whatevers.

Where's "Silent Running"?

cman: Star Trek First Contact, IMO, is the best Trek film of all time (and this is coming from someone who didn't like TNG). A lot of people like Star Trek II more, but Kahn is just too preachy.

First Contact better than Wrath of Khan, are you insane? Even Search for Spock was better than First Contact.

Moon, Serenity should both be in top 10.

The Fifth Element and Spaceballs would be in top 20 for me.

OK finally got that slideshow to work(get off me dirt).  Rule 1 for all slideshows about movies and video games is only 1 per franchise.  Leaving Dark Star, Moon, WoK, etc off just so we can have two SW and Aliens movies on the list is bad form.

Snotnose: Can one of you ADD types type in the list?  Deslide doesn't work and I'm too lazy to click all the slides.

Event Horizon
The Black Hole
Fire in the Sky
The Ewok Christmas Special
Space Cowboys
Spaceballs
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
The Astronaut Farmer
Magic Mike
Thelma and Louise

However leaving Star Trek completely off the list is not

"Solaris"? Nope, sorry. Replace that with "Moon" maybe and I'd be OK with the list.

Good movie, but all on Earth.

The more I watch STTMP, the more I prefer it over the rest of the Trek flicks. I get tired of generic action masquerading as science fiction just because of the setting, and I really wish we could get more than one serious science fiction film every couple years.

I really dug the Clooney Solaris, and the soundtrack is good for bedtime listening.

Dark Star should be on the list because if not for that movie there wouldn't be any Alien or Aliens.

Alien is just Dark Star as a horror film, it's even written by the same guy!

Snapper Carr: Soderbergh's Solaris over Tarkovsky's? No Forbidden Planet or Moon or Dark City? List is wanting

/Honorable Mention: Outland.

Not sure Dark City really counts as a space movie, it is only revealed towards the end to explain some oddities of the plot, the fact that they are in space doesn't really play much of a part in the story

Anyone see Calling Europa? It's a bit of a cross between Moon and a found footage movie, NASA advised on it as well, pretty good flick.

You have to take into account the context: WoK came out after the disaster that was Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It took us back to the heart of the show: the characters. Plus it looked better for a helluva lot less money (thank Nicholas Meyer for that). The effects were pretty groundbreaking for the time. But First Contact is probably #2 on my list of favorite Trek movies.

I'd also try to fit "Sunshine" in there somewhere. An under-appreciated movie, imo.
