Maybe in the UK, but all those nail salons, Chinese takeout places, cell phone kiosks, etc you see in the US that never seem to have any customers are money-laundering/tax-dodge operations.

Actually given that the terrorists were Somali and the mall was in Kenya it would have been very difficult to tell the "immigrants" from the locals.

It's interesting that many US news stations are choosing to not report the full story.  According to international news, this went way beyond shooting and grenades. I've read multiple articles about hostages being tortured (noses and fingers cut off, hung on hooks, etc) before being killed.  I understand this is all gruesome and tragic, but why omit the nefarious details?

"Terrorism is an exploitation of openings"

So terrorism is like being a 16 year old boy?

CSB: I used to get my nails done in an Albuquerque strip mall in a salon owned by a Vietnamese family. I was often the only person in the shop, but frequently saw their teenage/early 20s sons in the store, putting  cash into the register. Yeah, into, not out of, the register. They'd pull up in some seriously expensive vehicles, were often dripping jewelry - especially expensive watches - and all wore designer clothes, including the nail techs.

A year after I moved out of Albuquerque, the shop was busted as part of a drug bust. The kids were drug dealers and the shop was their front for laundering their money.

I've been wary ever since of "family owned" shops that had owners or techs in designer clothes/jewelry/with expensive vehicles.

End CSB.

I have to agree with you - I'm very suspicious of those operations.

I'd make a reference to the "Going Out of Business" store in You No Mess With the Zohan...but that would require me admitting not only that I saw it, but that I  remembered it.

Yes, very weird. Almost like they're afraid of offending our sensibilities or something. I'm not even sure what angle they're trying to report from, what's the point of protecting these arseholes? You'd think the public learning of the gruesome details would help increase pressure on leaders to nail Al-Shabaab on their own turf.

The terrorists did those things for publicity.  Headlines that scream "Terrorists will mutilate you and torture you before they finally execute you and defile your body" just play into their goals.  They are using the threat of violence to push their policy goals, if they can make that threat worse, they have more leverage.

Maybe because they are trying to be real journalists who check facts and just don't report as true any wild rumor found on the internet. There is lots of crazy stuff out there.

Pretty much all of those. At a lot of malls I see these stores and kiosks that sell movies from asia. Some of them look pretty cool but I never see anyone in the stores shopping.

Because it's the Religion of Peace* don'tcha know? Can't have our Islamic jihadist terrorists doing anything horrifying!

*Peace meaning "They want to kill everybody else, then there will be peace."

I hate stories like this because it gives racists, religious bigots, and the pants-wetting fearful free reign to express their hatred and say "I told you so" and drown out any meaningful discussion.

Witness a large proportion of comments in this thread and the others on this event.
