phed: What is it about punk threads that get people arguing about what is an isn't punk?

In my experience, most punk fans are humorless and have nothing better to do.

People get so geeked about "the birth of ________ music" -- but there's no birth, it's a permeable osmosis.  And labels of style are retroactively applied.  It's just critics jerking off.

I think we can all agree that Avril Lavigne is the most punk of all.

I mean look at the leather spiked bracelet she wore that one time.

Punk rock was rock 'n' rolls retarded step brother. It was for people who were ugly and with no talent.
It was a reaction to creative good looking talented people who dominated rock for the twenty years prior.

It does have energy, it did have a statement, but who cares?

They year was 1956.Proto-punk Greta "Taffy" McMillan grabs a beat up cigar box, some construction paper, rubber bands and glue making the world's first festive craft lute. With bouncy strings and a dream she went on write two of punk rock's seminal songs the proto-Bowiean freakout "Pretty Pretty Kitty City" and the nihilistic anthem "Don't Read My Diary, Brad."Too punk to actually record said genius, she quickly became bored with the artform. After the legendary "Show and Tell" performance, which was called punk rock's Woodstock. Shefamously tossed her ax into a trash can saying simply, "ICK! This thing is sticky." This simple act of defiance of course led to the tradition of rock groups smashing their instruments in anarchic protest. Pete Townsend once gave direct credit to her stating that Greta was "quite possibly a real perosn."
