I mean look at the leather spiked bracelet she wore that one time.

And her mean face!  Don't forget her mean face!

People get so geeked about "the birth of ________ music" -- but there's no birth, it's a permeable osmosis.  And labels of style are retroactively applied.  It's just critics jerking off.

Some people in this thread are in denial.  I definitely heard quite a few folks declare Green Day 'true punk' back in the day.  There are some absolute dumbfarks in all subgenres of music.

The only thing less punk than arguing about who and who isn't punk is arguing about who started it

/I'm pretty sure someone relatively well known said something like that first but I can't be bothered to find out.

the first track they're playing, the riff is a knockoff of Kick Out the Jams. plus good lord. the seeds, the sonics, ? and the mysterians, and all that. this is just a spanish version of american 'garage punk,' search 'cambodian rocks.' they actually rip it off much better.

Combustion: YoOjo: Was it Miley or Bieber that said they were punk this week?
I was just ten but I remember well when the Sex Pistols were making the evening news for AWing the Queen's Silver Jubilee and not having their presence at No 1 in the singles chart acknowledged. Nothing shocking about that today, but in comparison I don't know if Miley or Bieber are just as confrontational, just as dumb to the moms and dads, and just as 'right place, right time' as the Pistols were.
So maybe Miley and Bieber are punks?

Actually, you could argue that Miley and Bieber are MORE punk than the Sex Pistols: they do what they want without thinking "Oh...if I wear this or do this, will it be 'Punk?' What will everyone think??? Ohh I hope I shock them with my messy appearance!!" constantly.

Thrash Metal > Punk
Thrash Metal = Punk by people who know how to play.

I still listen to both DRI and GBH, so getting a kick...

Fark all the labels though.

The Sex Pistols were as manufactured as Miley or Bieber.  Or the Monkees for that matter.

Unlike Miley or Bieber, though, John Lydon was smart enough to eventually rebel against his creator
Malcolm McClaren.

The Monkees weren't about music. They were about rebellion, about political and social upheaval!

Bieber certainly is a a punk though, I'll say that.

That's absurd.  Species are scientifically and objectively verifiable; music is subject to artistic sensibility and taste.  Entomologists and music critics aren't analogous, and entomologists, AFAIK, don't obsess over pinpointing "the birth of the first specimen of _____ insect."

The Dynamite Monkey: Nobody "birthed" punk rock.  It has its origins in the early 60s, and in fact even in a lot of gutbucket blues before that.  It's always been a part of rock and roll and even when the terms were first used they were intended to indicate a "retro" movement.

However, if anyone HAS to have that title, Death Whipser is correct, it is The Stooges.

Seems about right (though you might throw the MC5 in there too).  There's nothing in Los Saicos (besides it being in Spanish) that would make it stand out as "punk" when played along side the more garage-sounding stuff from the assorted versions of "Nuggets".  It doesn't sound any more punk than contemporary records by the Seeds, or even the rougher tracks by the Kinks.

"The species problem is a mixture of difficult, related questions that often come up when biologists define the word "species"

Why would entomologists be different from primatologists?

Most importantly differences between genres, or sub-genres or umbrellas is about objective characteristics (tempo, instruments, lyrical subject, time signatures, etc etc) and not about being good music or bad music
