And the absolute best thing that could happen would for nobody -- no onlookers, no protesters, nobody except one solitary photographer -- to show up. Just let their handful of halfwits wander around a field and hoist a few signs and ensure that enough pictures of their pathetic assembly are taken for everyone else to laugh at. That won't happen, of course, but it's what should.

Is the third guy over in that picture just wearing a bonnet, baseball jersey and jeans?

I wonder if they just paid a crazy homeless guy to help them hold their sign because they were short on people.

Way back in the 80s the Klan wanted to hold a rally in Wilmington, NC. They got their permit but the word went out around town among the TV stations and the newspapers, and even the preachers in town all said the same thing to their audiences: they a right to rally, we have a right to ignore them.

On the day of the rally, there was one photographer from the paper and one cameraman from a TV station, but they hung back out of sight and were there only if something happened. A handfull of Klan Klowns showed up, waved their flag, and were obviously disappointed that there was no crowd at all. So they packed up and went home. They haven't been back.

Really, ignoring them is the best thing.

They've returned to the site of their greatest defeat.

I was in West Virginia one time, a little over a decade ago, when I stumbled upon a KKK gift shop. It didn't say KKK any where on the store, but they had this logo all over the souvenirs. I wasn't familiar with it, but something about it bugged me. Then I noticed the old-timey pictures on the walls. All of them were Klan rallies and cross-burnings. My eyes bugged out of my face, I turned around and walked right out the door. The old lady minding the store had her toothless grin on the the whole time.

Yep.

And this is what makes a strong First Amendment without any restrictions on "hate speech" so farkin' awesome.  They get to get their message out there, and we get to deride them and/or ignore them as irrelevant as we so choose.

The American Nazi Part held their protest in my town a few months ago. It was one guy with a pathetic cardboard sign, 30-40 counter protesters, and about eight cops. The saddest thing was realizing everybody was getting what they wanted from the situation. Mr. Nazi got be the center of attention, the counter protesters got to make a valiant stand against hate (as pathetic as it was), and the cops had something to do on a Saturday morning besides dealing with drunk college students.

I quite disagree.  The Klan used to be a very real, shockingly mainstream thing.  They used to have rallies with hundreds of hooded Klansmen.  THAT'S some scary shiat, knowing that a sizable section of your community hates you, and that you don't know who they are.  The Klan has been marginalized to the point of near-irrelevance, which is fantastic, and I think speaks well of the US in a better-late-then-never kind of way.

"Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, led the country when slavery was abolished."

Fun fact: That photo of Lincoln is the last formal portrait taken. He sat down for the photo soon after his inauguration. When the photographic negative plate cracked while it was being developed, the photographer threw the plate away because he figured there'd be plenty more opportunities for photos for the next 4 year of Lincoln's term.

That was right before he was assassinated. All we're left with is that one print made off of that one plate.

While I can see the comical side to this I am also bothered that they were allowed to hold their rally at this site being who they are and knowing what they represent... I understand First Amendment rights however this is hallowed ground we're talking about here and not just some street corner or city park.

AFAIC this is akin to fake shouting 'FIRE' in a crowded movie theater. I feel that First Amendment rights shouldn't be applied here as a reasonable excuse. If they want to hold their rally somewhere else go at it but not on the battlefield where so many had died to form this great nation.

Like the year the KKK decided to hold a rally in Lexington...on the same day the state marching band competition was being held in the city.

The whole state tried to squeeze in the UK coliseum to see the performances....and barely a soul was downtown to watch those guys protest. The aftermath in the paper was worth a chuckle.

The KKK has had three incarnations since the end of the Civil War.  First time was during reconstruction.  That version of the KKK dried up and blew away after federal troops left the south and Jim Crow was put into place.  Second time was during the height of mass immigration to the US from southern/eastern Europe.  In addition to being racist, KKK 2.0 was nativist, anti-labor, anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish.  The second time around it became a powerful national political organization.  It fell apart when then leader of the KKK, D.C. Stephenson, was convicted of rape and murder.  The third time around was a FBI COINTELPRO op right from the beginning.  The guys you see now are just mentally ill, idiots of combination of the two.

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll have to say it again.

No.

Ignoring evil will NOT make it go away.  If racism were truly so rare as to be that irrelevant, it would be fine.  But there is so much pervasive racism in this country today that these events CANNOT simply be ignored.

They need to be dealt with instead by massive counter-protests.  The ideal ratio would be 1000 to 1, show the racist scum that they are massively outnumbered and that their hate will not be tolerated by society.  They can have their right to free speech, I would never deprive them of that.  But they need to know that the rest of us do not find their repugnant ideas acceptable.

The answer to evil speech is not silence, it's more speech.

Bermuda59: "Hey, where da white racists at?"

Seemingly in decline. "Racism" as it was known in the old days is on it's last legs in America. Sure, there are plenty of people that say racist things (especially on the internet), but the litmus test of "is this racism?" is, for me, as follows:

Someone says "I hate blacks/mexicans/jews/muslims/christians/whites/etc." Did they say it in person, where someone in the "hated" group heard it firsthand from the speaker? They're racist.

If they said it among other people that look a lot like them, or in some semi-anonymous place on the web but shy away from saying such things in the presence of the "hated", they aren't racist... they're an asshole.

Real racists don't care if people know/think they're racist... they take pride in being so. These kinds of people are thankfully a dying breed. Assholes, on the other hand, are far more prevalent, but thankfully they tend to make an effort not to directly offend those that they claim to hate so much. Wouldn't want them scary black folks thinking you're a racist asshole, would ya?
