On a Friday the 13th.

That really left me with a sinking feeling...

If you jump to around 37:45 there's a good exchange where the commander of the rescue operation rips the captain of the abandoned ship a new asshole.

Schettino is a piece of garbage to put it mildly. It's astounding that someone with such a poor grasp of command responsibility could be put in charge of a ship.

UberDave: Good thing it's only 46 minutes long.

From the first couple minutes, it's apparently narrated, scored, and (presumably) edited, which is better than I first assumed (46 minutes of raw footage).  Don't have time to watch much more now, but I'll give it a go later.

It is flabbergasting that the captain spent a whole hour knowing that the ship was damaged and possibly sinking, but telling the coast guard, local authorities, and passengers that everything was just peachy.

When the crew finally convinced the captain to abandon ship, it was too late.  Had they been in deeper water half the passengers would be dead.

And apparently the captain never did notify the coast guard that they were sinking, as evidenced by the footage from the rescue copters.  Where is the Concordia?  There it is... holy $!@# it is sunk!

The coast guard was completely dead on in their fury over the captain and officer's actions.  They caused the disaster, and then compounded it.  They quite literally left people to die, waiting for direction that never came.

Manslaughter is the right thing to charge the captain with.  He has blood on his hands.

Schettino got served up a plate of humiliation by the coast guard.

"You want to go home? Its dark and you want to go home?"

Just sort of skipping around it:  They are claiming it's a blackout/generator problem.  I presume they knew right away that they had run aground, right?

I think if I were on board that night I would have done absolutely the wrong things.

Nah, no way this boat is in trouble. Look at all the tourists panicking.

But I have thought how horrible it would be to be on the low side and have to get up to the high side when the ship was coming down, and have wondered how long that rotation took. My mom used to be in a wheelchair, and she liked cruises, this would be terrifying.

I've also wondered, given how close they were to the land, if they could easily makeout the land and how many people jumped, or just stepped off the boat on the low side.

Stream of conscious fright ending now, but I'll add in the extra fright of having kids to take care of at the same time.

TLDW. Would someone please post the time stamp as to when the "I'm the King of the World" part occurs?

I am really dredging the depths of my twisted, jaded heart to find sympathy for the people on the lifeboat complaining that all of their money and jewelry was still back in the room... Those poor people barely escaped with their cameras and iPads!

The Concordia never completely sank.

So, um, couldn't a lot of people have survived by getting to parts of the ship that didn't submerge?

2013-09-27 04:43:31 PM
Well, most people did survive, but perhaps only because they were so close to land that the ship hit bottom.

How do you climb up decks that are pitched 70 degrees up.

With instructions to go back to your cabin, what do you do if you have aisleways filling with water and shiat floating all over (and you have kids).

What do you do if you're at your muster station and the ship's list basically rolls the ship on top of you.

I am amazed only 32 people died.

With some morbid curiosity I would love to hear the stories of people that were waiting for the lifeboats when the ship starts rolling on top of them.

I have zippo knowledge of ship design, but it seems many modern cruise ships are disasters waiting to happen and I would like to hear more about that.

Knowing what I know of the Italian government and how that culture operates, Schettino gets off with a light sentence. Does a couple of years and moves to a villa on Corsica. Just watch.

They need to stop designing cruise ships like skyscrapers....

Not sure, would you test it out for us and report back?

They did.  That's why lots of people survived, despite the captain's best efforts.

To be fair to the Captain, this was his previous command, so he really wasn't sure why everyone was so upset:

To avoid all of this, ALL the Captain had to do was stay ON the approved cruise path. The idiot had to go OUT of his way, he had to make a conscious effort, to fark this up.

He's the captain - he's responsible - he should be shot. I'll volunteer to pull the trigger.

Maybe the captain was expecting it to be more like the Anrdea Doria.

You're right. The ship was sinking, parts of it were going underwater, and you can't breathe underwater, duh, you'll die, so why didn't those people just go to the parts of the ship that didn't have water in them? If they all would have done that, none of them would have died. It's what I would have done if I were there. Problem solved, right?

2013-09-28 02:45:42 PM
When they rolled that ship upright, they flooded the other half of it.

The starboard side never went under, and now the water is up to deck 7 everywhere.

So there was your stuff, high and dry for 20 months, totally unharmed...until now.
