Mmmmaybe. There's pirates, then there's pirates. Dressing up a "Arr, ahoy" pirates, probably not all that offensive. Dressing up as, say, modern Somali pirates or something, a no no.

If the Brits call masquerades or costume parties "fancy dress parties", then what do they call parties where you're expected to dress fancy (tux, suit, dress, tie, jacket, etc.)?

At least they aren't calling it "cosplay" -- The single dumbest word in the world, right before "twerking".
