Interesting, but didn't really have anything on me that seemed all that important, or useful.

Most of the "marketing" data was one step about nonsense, although the stuff based on public record was pretty close.

Of course I do have a habit of not using my correct birthday whenever I don't see a reason that someone needs it.

Yeah right.

why would i give a company all of that personal information just to create an account to see what personal information of mine they have?

After filling out the form it should redirect you to a webpage that displays this :

Thanks for giving us all this nice juicy information about yourself !
And now that we know that you're a sucker who falls for this kind of crap, we'll target you with even more ads !

Umm, they're asking me for the last 4 digits of my SSN?  How is this legal?

It reminds me of a trick ummm.. someone I used to know used to play on 419 scammers.  Get them to full out fake "security forms" before agreeing to send them money for their trunk of gold or whatever.  Most wouldn't do it, but some would.  Buried somewhere in the form, there would be two questions: "What is your email address?" and "What is your email password?".  The great majority who got to that point would provide this info.

I am a 5'8", petite natural blonde, living in a 3 bed apt with my son. I make over $100k/yr in the entertainment industry. I shop at Neiman Marcus, The Gap, and Abercrombie and Fitch. I trade in my Corvette every year for a newer model and like helping local homeless shelters  around the holiday season. I am a divorced woman of 3 years and have chosen a lesbian lover. I don't belong to any political orangization and think all politicians are skeezers. I think gay rights is a contradiction in terms just like Government guaranteed freedoms of happiness.

Track THAT you sons of biatches.

I remember this guy said in an interview that when one of them would start bothering him he would ask them to wire him $50 in earnest money to make sure they were on honest before he would follow through with what ever they wanted. Like you said most would cut communications with him after he made that request, but a few would actually send him the money.

ongbok: wire him $50 in earnest money

The problem with that modality is a common scam is to do something similar.. send fake or stolen money orders/bank cheques, cash them, and wire half of the money back to them (or a mule).  That, plus if they have your real address it's usually trouble.  You think email spam is bad, just wait until they start using you as a mule to ship goods bought with stolen credit cards.

A friend of mine has over $10 million in uncashed bank cheques and money orders collected over the years (sent to a drop box), all fraudulent of course.

The data for me is way off.  Apparently I have a kid who's 4 years old, my household income is 45k -50k, and I've ordered 2 offline purchases through the mail in the past two years.  All incorrect.  I have no children and have never ordered anything through the mail.

Don't worry, there are filters on the internet to prevent this information from getting out. Hell, even fark has a SSN filter. If you type in your social security number, it gets filtered out. Try it yourself.

My SSN is ***-**-****.

So glad I'm not the only one who thought that. It's like the "unsubscribe here" link on spam mails. It's a crapshoot whether they just use that to tell their servers if there's a live human on the other side the e-mail addy.

They can figure out I wear shoes, but not that I wear a size 14. They can figure out I wear t-shirts, but not that I wear 2XLT. I offer the information time and time again, but the people who sell the targeted advertising don't care to tell their advertisers that I don't fit their product line.

Last Fark thread on this basically summarized it like this:

They use the last four of your social for verification purposes only. It's verification purposes only because they already have it.

But most of the information is kinda, well, unimpressive.

Eh. If I'm going to see ads - and I am, because I live in a capitalist society - then I'd like to only see ads I'm interested in. For example, I actively seek out video game trailers for new releases - if they could replace, say, diaper commercials or old people pharmaceutical commercials with those, I'd be happy. And similarly, I'd bet there are people who never want to see a video game commercial and would rather see ads for things they want.
So, yeah, have some more marketing data on me. And if you want to be really slick, then tag your ads with "personally tailored by [marketing company]", because that way I can set up a filter to block badly tailored or untailored stuff.

I had two WTF moments.  One was googling my address to make sure people could get good directions.  The first result was Zillow, showing my house, how much I paid for it and current value.  Zillow still exists, but I don't think they are listed first anymore. They even have an android app so you can know how rich of neighborhood you are in.

The second was searching my brother in law, just to see how much was out there on him after some discussion along the lines of this thread.  It listed him and his family members including a half brother that's 25 years older than him he's only met once or twice and didn't know what city he lived in until this search.  They left out street addresses, email and phone numbers but promised them if you paid up.

I don't recall the company that had the family connection information, but I don't think they are one of the top results anymore.  I don't think I care much about my data being collected.  I got nothing to hide.

/I can only imagine the psyche profile gathered from things I click with smart or funny on Fark alone.

The telemarketer already has my telephone number too, but why the hell would I want to verify that it really is mine to them in the first place?

Google thinks I am the opposite sex and half my own age, based on my professional interests. Interesting stereotyping. I won't do anything to disabuse them of the notion. I do, however, clear my history and cache before accessing my gmail account.
