Aww! What a cutie-pie! I keep seeing similar conures at our local pet stores and have to stay strong. They are so adorable!

Until one of those bastards bites down on your finger and won't release it!

Jeez!! Where have YOU been???? j/k. Good to see you, Sir!

It's been a very trying week here at Casa Del QJ's Madre...

She's been on thyroid medication since about 1965.
Her doctor won't renew her prescriptions unless he sees her at least once a year.
This year, she decided "screw that" and has refused to go see him to get the script renewed.
She figures it's just a ploy to get money.
I've explained to her that no doctor will renew a prescription if they haven't seen you in over a year.
She still says "screw that".

She's gone without her thyroid medication for over three months now.
She's too old to spank, and to big to pick up and carry in to the doctor.
Now she has less energy than a drunken sloth and her appetite has crashed.
This is throwing her coumadin levels all out of whack and she's running dangerously low.
They're low enough that the anti-coagulation clinic made sure to make sure I knew signs of stroke.

I have no backup. I have no assistance from siblings. I'm twisting in the wind.
The last 4 or 5 evenings, she's gone to bed before 8pm.
Hell, she lives for the evening news. She watches it faithfully on two different stations
until at least 11:30pm, and here she is going to sleep 3 hours early.

I've explained to her that when she ends up in the hospital, it will cost more than the trip to her
regular doctor, but they will undoubtedly renew her thyroid prescription (assuming she doesn't stroke out in the interim).

After writing this, I need to go kick something, but instead I'm going to go out front and pet the kitty.

Wow. Hang in there as best you can QJ

johnson442: Many more of us are out here reading and hurting for you; we are just too shy to pop in and say something, or can't think of anything comforting (or meaningful!) to say, Yeah, we've been there. Yeah, it hurts like Hell on Earth. Oh, yes, we know. We know.

THIS. I am usually very quiet, especially about things like that, because I know all too well there's nothing you can say that will make it all better. I just throw out the generic "hugs to those who need them" and if you really need them, I'm always good for more than one.

Q_J so sorry to hear that your Mum is giving you fits. Sort of reminds me of my Mother in law who refused to go get her hair cut..and she used to have her hair done once a week! If your Mom has dementia, that kind of refusal is to be expected. Are you able to make the appt for her, and then just tell her she is going?or would that be too ugly?

((Hug))

Yeah - our conure is a rescue; neglected, basically, for nearly a year. He gets kind of bitey at times - I have the scars on my arms attesting to that.  The biting is much, much better. His beak is strong, though. If he doesn't draw blood then there is definitely a bruise. But he is sweet and has really calmed down since we've had him. He loves to sleep in our hand or snuggle down in a sleeve.

yobbery: One of his greatest talents was that of butterknife electrician. Wire nuts were merely a suggestion, but he at least had the courtesy to toss 'em in the junction box.

I'm thinking maybe we should get those two together, this guy just used wire nuts, he saved the junction boxes to use in the attic for circuits that just ended.

The number of plugs and the feet of wire that were burnt are frightening.

I was kinda wondering the same thing, and then remembered the fits my grandma threw when we tried to trick her that way. You really can't make them go and it's very upsetting.

Q_J, huge hugs from the Akvavit drinkers, too. We've totally been there and it sucks.

I was going to say "Nah, not really", but it made us both happy and kept me out of trouble for a few hours, so I guess it is awesome in its own weirdly special way.

I plugged a couple of the opossums that have been stealing the cat's food.

Plus, I got to hold the kitty and give him pets, lovin' and skritches.
And *he* got to make biscuits on my arm and play with my whiskers.
That might be a three-fer!

Real Women Drink Akvavit: lilyspad: Real Women Drink Akvavit: I gotta see what the dealie-o is with that. I'm gettin' old, you guize. I had a good run though, didn't I?

Wait......wut? You don't have a driver's license? EVAR?????? Wow. I know it happens. I have an (ex) step-daughter who is about 42 and has never had a license to drive. Never wanted to. Was afraid of the consequences, I guess, I don't know. Never dated anybody either, but that's a whole 'nuther story. Read weird religious up-bringing on that one.
Anyway....good for you for thinking about doing it! Becoming independent of public services and other people for transport is refreshing! But don't look at it as giving up something! Look at it more as getting something MORE to experience life with!! Just another tool!!! Think of all the things you could DO!!!
We're all getting old-er...it's all a matter of how you look at it, now isn't it?? :D

I'm turning 44 in a couple of months, and I gave up my driver's license over 20 years ago. Suicidal trees and assorted signs kept leaping in front of whatever I was driving at the time, so I figured it was only a matter of time before a person or a critter did the same thing and just quit driving. The drunk wench knocking me down was an impressive display of my survival instinct and ability to be *poof!* GONE if I need to be, even with all these old injuries coming back to haunt me, but I really don't need to show off like that anymore. I'd much rather have the protection of a ton or two of steel between me and the other crazies that live in these parts.

Actually, it was a car accident when I was 13 that I'm pretty sure is the reason I'm such a terrible driver. (Or WAS a terrible driver). Right before I quit driving, a friend pointed out that I tend to swerve a little AWAY from other cars when startled and that's why I keep bumping into stuff. I'm afraid of the other car. That's kind of stupid. Another driver can get out of my way, a tree can't. So we'll see what DMV tells me ...

Wow! That explains it. Scorpio or Sagittarius? It's funny, but either one makes sense. :D

Yeah, that one would be my sister-in-laws Sun Conure from hell. Rusty hates anyone who isn't his mommy. I went into his room once just to say hi but he flew at me and started chomping down on my arm and drawing blood until I flung him off of me and ran from the room and closed the door after me. (They wanted to give him to us at one point and I said NO NO NO NO NO) Just because I have 4 birds (including an African Grey) doesn't mean I need to add another bird to my group. Especially one like Rusty.
