You're not alone in the crap storm, I was expecting a delivery (custom made flag display case) from UPS Friday. I got up and checked the tracking site and instead of Out for delivery it says Exception: Train derailment, Amarillo Texas. Just another train wreck in a long line of them. Pretty much describes all of 2013 for me.

My cellphone like OlderGuy's has but one porpoise, the one it was made for.  No computer, no camera, no nuthin' else.
Still have mayhap 5 min of Transcribing to do til I can send this section to its intended recipient. Also been advised we need to to HarmonyLodge to Clean Up tomorrow after lunch. Got VLQ rehearsal & riser placement for Nov show at chorus tomorrow. Typical Mucking Funday, eh?

You know this makes perfect sense, because he loves you!

While I would like to think that that is the reason, what is more important to me is his interest in consuming almost anything remotely edible these days that makes me happy. At this point in time, I really no longer care if it's good for him or not, as long as he keeps eating (and taking his meds like a champ), and is comfortable and content.

sherpa18: *Warning, wall of text*

Blargh. So last Monday evening, my ISP goes down. Now that is not all that unusual, but the next morning, it's still out. Note that since I also get my phone service through them, I can't just call to complain. While I do have a prepaid cell for emergencies, I hate to waste expensive minutes on crap like this, but I finally call them Wed morning, and they tell me I cancelled my service (and don't forget to return all their equipment within 72 hours or I will be billed for it). WTF?

I tell them I did not cancel my service, they insist I did. After fighting about it, I tell them fine, just restore the damn service. Which they will be happy to do. AFTER I return the equipment, schedule a new install, and pay a "new customer" deposit in addition to installation charges. Again, WTF? All you did was throw a switch to turn it off, just turn the damn thing back on.

So I drive over to their regional service center, make my way past half a dozen drones with the IQ of a brick, and finally get a manager who appears to have at least half a brain. I explain the situation, he pulls up the cancellation order on his computer - which is NOT my account #, NOT my name, but IS my correct physical address. Turns out that someone whose name I can not even begin to pronounce did indeed cancel their service, but typed my building letter (same apt. #) instead of theirs.

After profuse apologies, he agrees that the whole situation is not my fault, but I still have to swap out my existing modem. So next day, I drive back to bring it in (note this a good 35-40 minute trip one way), only to be told that they don't have any in stock to give me. At this point, if it was not for Caturday, I think I would have just told them to shove their service. Anyway, they agree to overnight me a new one from another location. I wait all day today, no delivery (which in my neck of the woods, can be as late as 8 PM).

So a little while ago, I go out to take a walk to work off the frust ...

Definitely time to look into getting a new ISP!!!  Glad to see you made it here for at least a little bit :-)

Strange story time (not animal related). After my Dad passed away my sister and I were helping Mom clean out my Dad's clothes, Mom came across a open box of condoms. She just looked at them and said " I guess I won't need these anymore, you to can split the rest of the box". Talk about looks of horror behind her back.. On the good side
Dad was 80 and Mom was 83 when he passed away.

At 80 and 83, I would guess they'd had them a while.
Nothing like a 40 year old condom to keep things interesting...

True, but it does everything better (and faster) than cable (IMHO). I had it for a short time before I sold my house, and it was far, far superior to cable. Alas, cable is my only option right now, hence my wall 'o text earlier  :o)

I wish. FIOS is nowhere near getting to my neck of the woods, I'm on the wrong side of my building to get a signal from DirectTV (not that I would want them anyway) -- crap, I can't even get a DSL line where I am :o(

However, I would not mind nuking my current ISP if the opportunity presented itself :o)

OlderGuy: valnt9: what the fark is FIOS??

Verizon fiber optics.. does the same as cable...

[warning: science content!]
Fiber optic is a faster and more reliable medium for transmitting data than on copper lines (coaxial, ethernet, etc.), as it sends pulses of light along hair-thin glass wires instead of electrical signals across copper. This allows for greater speeds, more bandwidth (as there can be more fiber wires in a single cable than copper), and no problem with electrical interference because it's LIGHT. Think about it, we've figured out how to get get cat pics on our computers with frickin' lasers! :D

Currently, most cable tv/internet and DSL runs are copper wire, somewhat limiting maximum bandwidth and throughput, but that's also partially due to legacy networking equipment. Fiber is preferred (where available, depending on cost and infrastructure) over copper for long runs because it also doesn't suffer the same attenuation problems that copper lines do, as well as the ability to run more wires in the same amount of space. It's not perfect though, as it's best for long, smooth runs, as the wires are still glass and can break if bent. Copper, however, can be used to run tighter turns (particularly ethernet, while coaxial cable is a biiiiit too stiff to traverse a 90-degree bend), and is much cheaper than fiber. Also, from a tech standpoint, it is ridiculously easy to fix problems with copper, which can be cut and spliced easily, where fiber is much, MUCH more difficult to splice, and simply attaching the somewhat-fragile end is a pain in the ass.

And with that, I'm gonna finish typing up something for class and GO THE HELL TO BED.

/the class where I'm learning this stuff, incidentally
//computer networking is spiffy-cool
///for more internet-fun, look up "Google Fiber" and "Dark Fibre," and find out why most ISPs and cable/tv providers are jerkfaces >:(

I do not need to look up that stuff to know most ISPs are jerkfaces. I don't really watch TV, so I could not really care less. Especially since if I want to zone out and watch something, I have the wonders of the internet with their far larger video library and a bag of Tapatio Doritos, so I'm totally set even if I didn't have cable TV. (also, my TV has a USB port, so YAY!)

Still working my way through the "strange, yet cute" animals. Here is a Potto:
veja.abril.com.br

There is more than one kind of Potto and they can vary wildly in size and appearance. They are indigenous to the tropical regions of Africa and are tree dwellers, rarely coming down out of the canopy. They have very strong jaws and can eat hard vegetation other tree dwellers cannot eat and also eat insects that smell so bad other tree dwellers will not eat them. They are very quiet and that is part of their anti-predation strategy. In some English speaking parts of Africa, they are also called the "softly-softly". Most importantly, look at that widdle facey-wasey! D'AWWWW!
