Not to worry, people who do understand things are still progressing and leaving whiny old ladies like you behind.

It must take a lot of energy to generate that kind of foaming-at-the-mouth hatred for children. I'm surprised the old girl still has it in her.

Yep, here's this huge list of things they've reported that haven't happened:

Wow.  I mean, I think the "assign every student a tablet" initiative is stupid and won't work, but I think that because I... think it won't work.

The froth-mouthed racism justification for opposing the idea hadn't occurred to me.

CEOs and people like this need to be purged.  We need a terror in this country.

The program was temporarily halted this week after enterprising students at one test school promptly figured out how to hack the iPads for personal use make bongs in Shop class...

Fixed that for m-m-m-my g-g-generation.

The actual quote isn't nearly as bad

Los Angeles Unified is a very depressed school district, regardless of how much technology students do or do not have. It continually has some of California's lowest test scores, and almost 1/3 of its students do not finish high school. (Throughout the rest of the state, only 13% of students don't make it to graduation.)

The waste of money on fancy electronics seems even more egregious when we consider what a terrible job Los Angeles Unified currently does educating its students.

No time or money should be spend on attempts to improve education while our education system isn't working!

It's just as stupid.

Here's here biatching about immigrants:

To add insult to injury, many of the students who will be receiving a taxpayer-funded iPad aren't even supposed to be in the United States. Los Angeles has one of the highest illegal alien populations in the U.S. Almost 400,000 illegal aliens live in this district. Almost a third of its students are classified as "English learners."

You must be smoking that grass you named yourself after.

So...

Article headline: Schlafly angrily denounces LA school district's decision to allow the children of illegal immigrants the right to use electronic devices.

What actually happened: Schlafly disagrees with LA school iPad program since it's expensive and legal residents get stuck with the bill for children of illegals.

Yeah, I agree with that. Interesting how a huge corporation managed to convince school boards how necessary it is to have their products in classroom.

To make it easier to do homework. iPads are probably cheaper than buying every kid a home computer and internet connection.

>You may want to keep these kinds of frivolous expenses in mind next time your own school district asks for a tax increase. In the district I live in, the school board is asking for a tax increase almost every year.

And here we have the crux of what is really trying to be communicated. It isn't about those brown anchor babies - it's those greedy, greedy schools who always want more and more resources.

Why, if we give them even the minimum necessary for operating expenses, opening new schools and healthcare costs, the taxes on my Villa would go up by $3.22. Instead of teachers, why can't they just hire temps from a staffing agency? That way, there would be no benefits necessary and everybody wins.

Oh well. Better get back to emailing my representative urging him to vote to repeal Obamacare again.

Computer labs take up space and can only cater to a handful of students at a time. iPads can cater to all students and staff simulataneously.

The US spends more money per student than other developed nations and get dumber graduates.  I say efficiency is the problem here, not funding.

In addition to what everybody else said, e-textbooks are far cheaper than print textbooks, and easier for students to carry.

If kids are on the computer all day at school we are seriously screwing something up. Seems like computer labs would be cheaper and longer lasting. Yes, computer skills are important, but seriously, 2nd graders should be reading books and painting with actual paints.

Well, ostensibly tablets tend to be cheaper overall, and the lowered cost of using digital textbook licenses instead of substantially more expensive textbooks means they'll earn their own cost back in a year or two.  Objections related to loss apply to textbooks, as well, the solution has usually been to just charge kids for not returning them at the end of the term.

Theoretically they're a cost-saving measure.  The problem really comes from their multi-functionality, when I was a kid you couldn't even hand out graphing calculators for a class without someone working out how to play games on them.

I had versions of Tetris and Bubble Bobble on mine when I was taking calculus.  Good times.

Why has no one mentioned the fact that giving kids tech like this suggests that a nonzero number of them learns a thing or two about computing (or programming, or even "hacking"/*-hatting)?

Remember that village where they dropped some iPads on some unsuspecting locals who jailbroke it in like two weeks?

// pffft, like kids in a depressed/"at-risk" school want to learn a marketable skill

Nothing. Now, doing  research without the internet,  that puts you at the disadvantage from hell, especially if your classmates have internet and you don't.
