I wonder if the republicans will actually do it? Will they trash the country to get their way?

House Republicans don't want workable legislation, they want another showdown with Obama, never mind how much taxpayer money that wastes. If they thought the CR had a shred of a chance to pass, they'd stuff it with even more ridiculous non-starters.

Imagine if the president kept his word about not invoking the 14th Amendment and instead used a National Security argument to override Congress and pay the bills.

/I'm well aware this will never happen.

My Dearest Tammy-Ann,

I fear all is lost and I will never gaze upon your face, nor sup upon your jauntily arranged plates of Little Debbie snack cakes again. When we came to the cesspool that is Washington D.C. to cleanse the atheist sharia-loving muslin from the "White" House and restore America's greatness we sorely underestimated the guile and craftiness of the socialists. Not only is "Capitol Hill" an actual hill, but there are insurmountable staircases -- some three, even five steps in height.

Our Hoverrounds sit motionless, our batteries depleted. Even Merle's prodigious Jazzy Plus was unable to tow our once-mighty steeds to victory, even with Merle's reduced tonnage having lost his nethers to the 'beetus. We all have orders in for new batteries from Medicare, but those batteries would be delivered by the Post Office, Obama's blue-clad Union Thug Army of Sloth.

Please ensure our sons Dale, Earnhardt, Three and Intimidator learn of this day that Freedom died.

I remain, your beloved,

This is why i voted for Obama for a second term. I'm hoping he'll go balls to the wall and just do what needs to be done now that he doesn't have to worry about Republican slander, lies, and misinformation about his every action.

I don't think the "establishment" GOP (McCain, Boehner et al) want that but they're handcuffed to the Tea Party who are cackling gleefully as they drive the bus towards the cliff.

Wow, let's get rid of all regulations on all corporations because we can depend on them to do what is best, just like they did in the run up to 2008 when they destroyed America's economy because of their traitorous greed.

Republicans want America to become a third world banana republic and to hasten the second coming.  They are filthy animals who should be expunged.  Jesus must be vomiting in his mouth whenever he hears a conservative speak.

No way. There's no chance that the people who brought us the Iraq War, tax cuts for the rich during a recession, and the Clinton impeachment would ever do harm to this great nation they just love so darned much for mere political purposes.

FTA: Include tax reform measures along the lines of the Rep. Paul Ryan principles.

why not just go full 9-9-9

FTA: Approve "regulatory reforms" including the REINS Act, which would basically gut the executive authority to make any regulations.

huh i wonder what this is let me go to the RANDPAUL site to see
This legislation would require Congress to approve every new major rule proposed by the Executive Branch, which has an annual economic impact of $100 million or more, before it can be enforced on the American people.
oh it is just something blatantly unconstitutional ok so that was kind of expected

The fact that we're debating raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can't pay its own bills. It's a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt limit weakens us. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." We're shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. We have a debt problem and a failure of leadership. We deserve better.

In a lot of ways I don't think people fully appreciate how psychotic this is. Matt Yglesias nailed it:

The Republicans are essentially asking for an end to constitutional government in the United States and its replacement by a wholly novel system. Things like this do happen. The British system of government used to feature a ruling monarch who was checked in limited ways by two houses of parliament. Over time, those houses of parliament leveraged their control over tax hikes into overall control of the government. On a somewhat slower time frame, the elected House of Commons nudged the House of Lords out of almost all of its de facto political power. And that's the House's proposal here. The president should become an elected figurehead (not dissimilar to the elected presidents of Germany, Israel, or Italy) whose role is simply to assent to the policy preferences of the legislative majority.

I actually don't think enough people are making a big deal out of the fact that this whole system is basically one massive constitutional crisis. This isn't a negotiating issue or a policy dispute, but a basic crisis of legitimacy in the way our government operates. Treating this as anything else is rather underplaying the issue.

In a way, everyone is Bob. When a man wipes his brow after a long day in the fields, he is Bob. When a woman looks at you, muscles aching from churning butter, and smiles, she is Bob. When every child runs home from the schoolhouse with laughter on their lips, he or she is Bob. Bob is in all of us, and all of us, in some beautiful way, are Bob when we put forth our best despite the pain and sorrow of living.

You know they would. They have said as much since before Obama was elected the first time. From Rushbo to actual important people.

Funnily enough, the biggest casualty is their own credibility. Even people that lean to the right are starting to be like "dude, really?"

No, it was Senator Obama's remarks when he voted "no" on increasing the debt ceiling.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/debtlimit.asp

Senator Obama also said:

Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is "trillion'' with a "T.'' That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President's budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we'll spend on Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like

bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on. Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America's priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans - a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.

The Senate continues to reject a return to the commonsense Pay-go rules that used to apply. Previously, Pay-go rules applied both to increases in mandatory spending and to tax cuts. The Senate had to abide by the commonsense budgeting principle of balancing expenses and revenues. Unfortunately, the principle was abandoned, and now the demands of budget discipline apply only to spending. As a result, tax breaks have not been paid for by reductions in Federal spending, and thus the only way to pay for them has been to increase our deficit to historically high levels and borrow more and more money. Now we have to pay for those tax breaks plus the cost of borrowing for them. Instead of reducing the deficit, as some people claimed, the fiscal policies of this administration and its allies in Congress will add more than $600 million in debt for each of the next 5 years. That is why I will once again cosponsor the Pay-go amendment and continue to hope that my colleagues will return to a smart rule that has worked in the past and can work again.

Our debt also matters internationally. My friend, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, likes to remind us that it took 42 Presidents 224 years to run up only $1 trillion of foreign-held debt. This administration did more than that in just 5 years. Now, there is nothing wrong with borrowing from foreign countries. But we must remember that the more we depend on foreign nations to lend us money, the more our economic security is tied to the whims of foreign leaders whose interests might not be aligned with ours.

I doubt even a majority of GOP senators would vote to convict.  Be one hell of a freak show tho.

2013-09-26 01:33:11 PM
It's no different than the democrats wanting everything.  Nobody is going to get all of what they want.  When one side wants something so radically different than the other side we get gridlock.  That's a good thing.  It keeps one side from going all wonky and starting another civil war.
