In order to draw boobs, it's helpful to have at least seen a few, up close and personal. Considering how a lot of artists draw comics, it does nothing to alleviate the idea of basement dwelling troglodytes who fear the girl folk for their magic and bewitching powers...

Sigh....fap fap fap.

/I kind of always assumed boobs were drawn intentionally supernatural...like they are supposed to be unrealistic, see how dudes in comic books often have a 8 pack abs or biceps too huge for their frames

Or maybe it's because comics are, you know, fantasy, and in fantasy you are not necessary trying to authentically reflect reality?  Meanwhile, the woman who wrote the primer on realistic breasts has presumably seen at least a couple, and she still drew them perfectly symmetrical.

By the way, "troglodyte" isn't just an insult, it actually means something.  You basically called them "basement-dwelling cave dwellers."

Not really.  It's important to keep that in mind when you're doing portraits or whatever, but cartoons are by their very nature devoted to stylistic shorthand, that's what the word 'cartoon' means.  Simplified, exaggerated.  Those are the key words.

Admittedly, some of the stuff she mentions does cross the line into being distracting/Liefeldish, like nipples that are always looking at the viewer or breasts not conforming to clothing in any way, but schematic/notational stuff like cleavage showing through cloth is perfectly fine as an artistic shortcut.  So is using rounded shapes instead of trying to master detailed fluid statics.

Cartooned characters have a basic shape, as long as it's always close enough for the reader to identify the character and ideally work out what they're supposed to be doing it's close enough.

That guide is only marginally useful as it takes no account toward the age (and other factors) of the person with said breasts.  The proper way to accurately draw them will change depending on their age, cup size, and how religiously they have been wearing a bra during their lives.  Plus you have the issue of breasts (any size) on a petite woman versus a plumper woman.  Breasts that are made of actual breast tissue behave differently than breasts which are mostly fat sacks.

That guide is only useful in a very specific scenario.  Breasts.

Actually, check the disclaimer at the bottom. The author said that it was only using the 'stereotypical super hero chest', which is going to be incredibly fit 20-something with magic perfect boobs.

Amazing how "MISOGYNY! SEXISM! WHARGARBL!" won't stop women from dressing up like the same female characters about which they complain, then complaining about male gaze and harassment after the fact.

#3 is horseshiat. I'm not going to claim a lot of experience, but I can tell you from personal experience that yes, many women's breasts will end up like the one on the right rather than the one on the left in that pose - and in the age and fitness range claimed.

Otherwise a pretty good point, although I've definitely seen cleavage through clothing - maybe not to the extent shown, but still obvious and not just in the decolletage.

Evidently there must be some congruence of opinion, or tacit acceptance or support, because I'm reasonably sure we can chalk "should women really be cosplaying, or at least cosplaying as certain fictional characters, because these characters are created by men, for men, as almost exclusively sexual objects pandering to male empowerment fantasy and/or male gaze, and whatever vein of empowerment that may exist is thoroughly undermined by the male-centric sexualization inherent to these characters, and thereby enable and perpetuate sexism in geek culture?" into the "said by nobody ever, not even feminists" category.

Unless there's  another reason than female empowerment there's a bajillion Mai or slave Leia cosplays out there. I'm all ears.
